WEDNESDAY: SEASON 1 CHAPTER 8 – A MURDER OF WOES

WEDNESDAY

SEASON 1 CHAPTER 8 – A MURDER OF WOES

In this chapter, Wednesday turns her attention to another possible suspect in the Jericho murders. As the villain is revealed, we find out that all this is part of a larger goal and someone unexpected is at the center of it all. Principal Weems takes action against Wednesday for putting the school in a bad position and we finally see Enid’s true nature.

First off, if I was Wednesday I would never go near one of the characters that has shown interest in her all season. The dude has a really bad temper and makes crazy threats. The other thing is that some of the things in this episode contradict Wednesday’s own characterization of herself earlier in the season. Even Enid mischaracterizes Wednesday in an otherwise superbly written episode. There is also a smart money-saving move in here by the director to not show a shapeshift on screen but rather cleverly hide it behind another character as the camera panned around. This thing does not appear to have a STRANGER THINGS-sized budget just yet, but it might get one if it really is getting the viewership Netflix claims it is.

Speaking of effects there is an epic battle in this episode where we get a werewolf situation and the effects are solid in some shots but look far to “soft” in others. I did like the design work on everything in this episode. The pacing in this episode is great and I really liked the emotional bowties we get, but also that the season did have some consequences. Not everything is alright and that’s always a good thing if you are planning on another season.

Best Line: “I can’t believe I’m going to miss your creepy lifeless eyes waking me up every morning. It won’t be the same without you.” – Enid

Second Best Line: “Enid, the mark you have left on me is indelible, any time I grow nauseous at the site of a rainbow or hear a pop song that makes my ears bleed, I’ll think of you.” - Wednesday

Third Best Line: “I know the suspense is killing you” - Wednesday

Fact – This episode kind of made me want a bumble bee-shaped neck pillow.

Fact 2 – Bianca’s character development in this series might be the best of anyone.

Fact 3 – Eugene has a cool power we finally get to see in this episode.

Oddity – “Thing” rescues one of the characters during the climax, but it seems to be a pointless exercise since this person doesn’t even end up being a factor in the final battle and has to have a complete change of heart in a matter of seconds to even get involved. It’s a bit janky.

This was a very strong last episode. I do wish they had done a little more with the soundtrack but there is really nothing here that wasn’t deserving of the highest score I give out. This one gets a 7 out of 7.
