SEASON 2 EPISODE 2 – THE HOUSE OF THE NIGHTMARE WITCH

This is one of several episodes that heavily features a character named Marcy aka “Hot Dog Water” (voiced by Linda Cardellini). Hot Dog Water has teamed up with Velma and they are sort of working for Mr. E and sort of not. Mr. E is the leader of the former Mystery Incorporated. Shaggy and Scooby are kind of suspicious of Velma, but is that suspicion warranted? They are after someone who was trying to steal some priceless Russian Faberge eggs from the museum. Of course, this is Mystery Inc. and they have to deal with the legend of Baba Yaga first.

Villain wise this is one of the crazier ones. It’s a witch riding around in a giant house with chicken legs. No, that isn’t a joke. That is what’s going on here and its fantastic.

In this episode, the gang is starting to get back together. Fred actually shaved and looks normal again. Shaggy’s hair is mostly grown back from getting shaved in his brief boot camp stay. Hot Dog Water actually joins the gang in solving the mystery this time around. In regards to animation, this one is a LOT more solid than the first episode of the season.

Overall the mystery for this one feels fleshed out pretty well, this is far cry from what we got in the first episode which actually ends up needing a part II to resolve. The art is actually quite a bit more solid as well with far more time put into the backgrounds, smoother transitions, and even a bit of 3D animation.

Fact – Fred has a Teddy Bear he named Mr. Trapples. Yep.

Second Fact – Linda Cardellini who voices Hot Dog Water is probably best known for being Hawkeye’s wife in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She has also voiced and acted as “Velma” in the live-action Scooby-Doo Movie (2002). Velma in this series is voiced by Mindy Cohn.

Oddity – Did I mention we’ve got a house with chicken legs in this….

Best Line – “Don’t even try that, you know the concept of time confuses me” – Fred

Second Best Line – “I got early probation for redesigning the prisons computer system to be more brutal and unforgiving” – Hot Dog Water

I give this thing a 4 out of 7. It’s an improvement on the last one, but Daphne isn’t in it and when the gang is completely together it’s tougher for me to get excited about any given episode.
