SCOOBY-DOO MYSTERY INCORPORATED :

SEASON 2 EPISODE 1 – THE NIGHT THE CLOWN CRIED

Oh man, to kick off this episode the gang is actually broken up. Shaggy (voiced by Matthew Lillard) has been sent off to military school, Daphne (voiced by Grey Griffin) is just checked out dating a popular movie star, Velma (voiced by Mindy Cohn) is masquerading as a “SPIRIT” like character that wants Mystery Inc. back together by enlisting the help of new Mayor Nettles (voiced by Kate Higgins), Fred (voiced by Frank Welker) is moping and growing his hair out like a mad man while looking for his real parents, and finally, Scooby (also voiced by Frank Welker) is locked up on a farm after trying to escape. On top of all this, Crystal Cove is being terrorized by a clown that just cries and drives around the freakin town scaring the crap out of everyone.

Fred kind of lost his mind a lot during Season 1, but in this one, he’s extremely disillusioned by the fact that Daphne isn’t immediately coming back to Mystery Inc. The fact that the gang is broken up for this episode is almost a downer. It’s probably my least favorite episode in this entire series.

Villain wise this is by far one of the worst ones we get. I am naturally creeped out by clowns but large baby clowns, not so much. The artwork in this episode is pretty lackluster especially for a kick-off episode to a new season, but to be honest, I was so thrilled we got a second season at the time that I really didn’t care. This thing could have just had 2 frames and I would have been pumped.

Fact – Scooby can drive tanks apparently. We can add this to his ability to drive the Mystery Machine and forklifts.

Second Fact – In this episode, Daphne is dating the main star of a movie series called “DUSK”. Dusk is also the name of one of the HEX Girls.

Oddity – I found it awesome that this episode features both “The Bloody Stake” and “Dawn Of The Doughnuts”, both themed restaurants, one of which was actually the front for a trap put together by Mystery Inc.

Best Line – He’s in Crystal Cove doing research for the latest Dusk movie, “Dusk 4: Still Dusk” - Velma

Overall I have to give this one a 2 out of 7 even with its clever nods to TWILIGHT, WATCHMEN, and JAWS. It’s rough and this is coming from a life-long Scooby-Doo fan.
