THUNDARR THE BARBARIAN: EPISODE 10 – STALKER FROM THE STARS (1980)

In this one Thundarr, Ariel and Ookla are riding through a snowy wasteland and they see something land from the sky in the distance. They happen upon an old amusement park where a few people live. Ookla has a cold and they attempt to get help there when something bizarre attacks them. It’s immune to Thundarr’s sun sword and Ariel’s magic. Can our heroes stop this stalker from the stars before it captures the inhabitants of the entire amusement park?

The freakin alien in this thing looks like a cross between a crazed centipede and the alien from aliens only he’s red. I don’t want to give too much else away about it if you are planning on checking it out, but this episode has some definite ALIENS crossed with THE THING elements.

I love the fact that they used this amusement park in the middle of the tundra for this episode. It’s another gutsy move that just speaks to how much the creative crew for this show was willing to try just about anything. There is a scene in this where Ariel uses her magic while inside a cocoon. I think this works with previously set rules because her hands are free and not tied together directly. When that is the case she can’t use her powers, or at least that has been previously established.

Art wise this is a pretty solid episode. I like the alien design and I like that they throw some other amusement park monster props in here as well as a rad snow wolf with a single horn on its head. The alien’s ship reminds me a lot of Ajax from FLASH GORDON. The artwork in the snowy wasteland isn’t mailed in at all it’s one of the stronger art sequences in this episode.

Fact – Ookla can catch a common cold.

Bonus Fact – Aliens are real in the Thundarr The Barbarian universe.

Ridiculous Fact - Ariel can send objects into space. Try and wrap your head around that all you STAR WARS fans out there.

Ludicrous Fact – When Ookla sneezes, his snot is out of control.

Best Line – “Typical barbarian, he leaps before he looks!” – Ariel.

For me, this thing gets a 5 out of 7. This actually one of the rare episodes I never saw as a kid. You can feel this show hitting its stride more and more.
