THUNDARR THE BARBARIAN: EPISODE 7 – THE BROTHERHOOD OF NIGHT (1980)
In this one, we get introduced to The Brotherhood Of Night which is a band of freakin werewolves running around attacking villages. They believe they can become invincible by adding the wizard Infernus and making him one of the pack. Thundarr, Ariel, and Ookla end up going to hunt down the wizard after being tricked by the pack after they have turned back into humans. Can our heroes handle the dangers of an entire werewolf pack?
This has got to be one of the episodes where Thundarr, Ariel, and Ookla get the luckiest. I won’t say exactly what happens that seems like a bizarre stroke of luck, but man on man, it’s super convenient. The werewolves are a strong point in this episode, but the wizard's outfit is beyond bad. This dude looks goofy as heck. I love that this one takes place in Washington, D.C., and features the pointiest monument of them all, The Washington Monument. There is also a cool fight scene at the Smithsonian museum.
Like in most episodes in this series there is just a bunch of awesome stuff going on, but this one really stands out as one of the more solid efforts, in spite of some of the wonky design choices. We do get a scene where the werewolves are fighting Infernus’s robots, which is beyond epic as an idea, but the robots themselves are also a victim of bad design choice.
Odd – One of the villains Thundarr and company run into is a lava worm. I think the idea might have sounded better on paper than they executed it in the artwork.
Fact – Apparently the “first of the werewolves” is still around hundreds of years into the future?
Best Line – “Your hide will keep me warm next winter!” – Thundarr (also, funny because getting a werewolf hide is probably impossible since they all seem to turn back into humans when they die).
For me, this one gets a 5 out of 7. The ideas in this are fantastic, but the artistic choices are rough.
