THUNDARR THE BARBARIAN : EPISODE 5 – TREASURE OF THE MOKS (1980)

THUNDARR THE BARBARIAN : EPISODE 5 – TREASURE OF THE MOKS (1980)

In this episode Captain Corden (who looks like Gretchen Whitmer the governor of Michigan in 2020), is basically pillaging every village she comes to with a giant armored ship and pirates at her side. She believes the Moks have a bunch of gold in their city and she is planning to take it under siege. Under normal circumstances, the Moks would be no match for her, but Thundarr the freakin barbarian, Ariel and Ookla might have arrived just in time?

Oh man, once this thing gets going Ariel, Ookla and Thundarr get attacked by a pretty goofy looking giant lobster. Thundarr is a bit of a jerk in this thing which seems to be a theme in some of these episodes. There are some scenes that don’t make a ton of sense, unless the missiles used by the battle ship are so old, they just don’t do that much damage. There is also a really weird scene where two of the pirates just go running off the battle ship away from Thundarr and Ookla for seemingly no reason. There is also another scene where Thundarr takes down a metal door by only cutting one side with his sword.

The art in this one is pretty decent and a lot of the background art work doesn’t feel plain, but some of the pirates are pretty generic looking. Having said that, the Mok city is actually pretty interesting and it’s also pretty cool that we get to see Ookla with a bunch of other Moks.

Story wise this one is pretty simple. We are given almost no background into the villain. We do find out that there is a village of Moks, but nothing is really said about them either outside of the fact that there are female Moks and they have a chief. Out of the first 5 episodes in the series, this one might be the 4th best.

Fact – This is the first episode where Ariel kind of shows some affection towards Thundarr, trying to get him to say she’s beautiful.

Bonus Fact – Thundarr’s sun-sword doesn’t seem to work for anyone but him. So if you steal it from him, it’s basically worthless to you.

Crazy Fact – The flag on Corden’s battleship looks exactly like the flag on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers helmet. Colors and everything.

Best Line – “We’ll route these devils”. – Thundarr. The group is being attacked by killer bees.

For me this thing gets a 4 out of 7. There is nothing terrible about it, but it doesn’t stand out above a few of the other episodes in the series thus far.
