THE GOONIES (1985)
There is a growing collection of movies that I will watch
over and over, because I own them and they are amazing. This is one of the
movies in the “heavy rotation”. Jenn and
I probably watch this thing 3 or 4 times a year. This movie is about a group of
kids that are about to lose their homes due to a developer moving in to make a golf
course. They decide to go on one last “Goonies” (which they affectionately call
themselves) adventure to find a lost treasure hidden by the legendary pirate “One
Eyed Willy”. With the “rich stuff” they are hoping to save their homes. This
movie is directed by Richard Donner also known for SUPERMAN II and the entire
LETHAL WEAPON series. It’s also got Josh Brolin (as Brand) who was freakin
Thanos, in the MCU. With one of my favorite actors Corey Feldman (as Mouth) and
Sean Astin (as Mikey) who is just one of
the coolest all around dudes in Hollywood.
Overall this movie, part Indiana Jones, part Stand By Me has aged extremely well. To this day it is considered a classic and still gets played in theaters and at special events from time to time. It is very likely the dialog between the kids in this movie influenced the movie SUPER 8 and newer series like STRANGER THINGS. I will say the script has a few things, that if you are being overly critical, you could pick apart. One being that towards the end of the movie Data (played by Jonathan Ke Quan, who is also Short Round in the Indiana Jones series) mentions being frightened by an octopus, but there is never an octopus scene in the movie. Instead we get a glimpse of the scene being shot in the Cyndi Lauper video “Good Enough” but it was cut from the film. You can also see this scene on some cable and tv stations, when they show the movie. It seems they would have cut Data’s line to accommodate that having never been shown in the movies theatrical release. It’s also unlikely that Data’s pinchers of power would have been able to hold his weight, but this movie is one of the reasons people go to movie in the first place. Movies don’t have to care about what some people feel can and cannot happen.
THE GOONIES is loaded with classic one- liners and even quotes I use to this day 35 years after its release. It’s definitely in my TOP 10 favorite movies of all time and makes frequent stops in the TOP 5. The sets for its day are over the top excellent and the direction is well paced with humor thrown in at perfect times. If you are in the younger audience reading this, you might have skipped this one, but if you can handle movies that are not PC, this is an enjoyable adventure worth your time. This movie is from a time when kids were completely fearless.
FACT : Jenn and I once took a long trip up the California coast with the idea of making it all the way to Astoria, OR. We made it as far as Garberville, CA. (about 521 miles short) Having never been that far north on the coast, I over estimated how much we could get done on the trip and we ran out of time, on top of being pretty exhausted just trying to get as far as we did. We did go to a big foot gift shop (Legend Of Big Foot) on that trip though, so that was pretty awesome.
