THUNDARR THE BARBARIAN : EPISODE 6 – ATTACK OF THE AMAZON WOMEN (1980)

THUNDARR THE BARBARIAN : EPISODE 6 – ATTACK OF THE AMAZON WOMEN (1980)

In this one Queen Straia who is an evil sorceress who rules over some Amazon warriors under the ocean is trying to take out the last of a rebellion against her from other Amazon women, who just want to ride horses and be awesome. Straia has a legion of sharks, a giant squid with a crazy face, and a giant spider like creature to do her bidding. Can Ookla, Ariel and Thundarr tip the scales in favor of the rebels?

A few great things about this freakin episode.

1. It features one of the raddest looking villains in the series, and this series is loaded with awesome villains. Unfortunately Straia takes off the costume that made her look so awesome pretty quickly in this episode.

2. It’s got Amazons, that also basically from Atlantis. So deal with all that.

3. Ariel shows off some awesome powers in this one. I think I mentioned before that being under water is not a problem for her at all regarding her powers.

4. It takes place with Mount Rushmore as a backdrop. Pretty damn cool.

I loved the art in this episode, from the designs of the Amazon costumes to the rad looking spider creature. I say spider creature, because they call this creature a spider, but he’s only got six legs. That makes him not an actual spider. This is another episode where we just get a ton of imagination and some decent dialog given the target audience. I also kind of like that Thundarr gets put on the back burner when the Ariel faces off against the evil sorceress in the final battle. It seems like the creators were aware that as a character she was far better rounded if she could handle her own, and she does.

One weird part of the episode (like in a lot of them) the villain lives and doesn’t seem like they will be down for the count for long, yet victory is proclaimed and they might be all going out for ice cream after this…I have no idea. I may have mentioned this in a previous review for this series, but I am guessing they couldn’t show Thundarr killing anyone really because of censorship, or if they did die, it wasn’t obvious.

Fact – Ariel cannot use her powers both of her arms are bound. If one of her arms is free, she’s good to go.

Best Line – “A ring of fire is no match for my tornado”. – Ariel. Apparently that is the rock, paper, scissors game for sorcerers.

For me this thing gets a 6 out of 7. It’s one of the stronger episodes so far.
