SHARKNADO 2 : THE SECOND ONE (2014)

SHARKNADO 2: THE SECOND ONE (2014)

Tagline: Shark Happens!

Okay – so if you read my review on the first movie, you pretty much know the kind of nuttiness you are in for. In this one Fin (played by Ian Ziering who is now probably more known for SHARKNADO flicks than 90210), and his former wife, April (played by Tara Reid), are on their way to Manhattan, to basically promote themselves, but mostly Fin. After bumping into a random cameo flight attendant, it becomes apparent the plane is entering a huge storm. Of course…there are freakin sharks in this storm and bam, that’s the opening sequence. The rest of this movie is spent running around New York trying to escape sharks flying through the air and decapitating everything, including the Statue of Liberty. No, I am not making that up. Along the way, Fin runs into his old girlfriend Skye (played by Vivica A. Fox) and for some reason, the producers try to cram a bit of a love story or whatever into this damn thing. No one cares.

First off, I love some of the cameos that we get. I really like Judd Hirsch as an actor and we get him for several scenes. You also can’t go wrong bringing Vivica A. Fox into any project you are doing. She’s extremely versatile and once was actually the voice of DJ Cassidy Williams in SCOOBY-DOO! MYSTERY INCORPORATED from 2010 to 2013. That is the kind of awesome we have going on here. Even the Sheriff from EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS (Kari Wuhrer who plays Ellen) shows up. So if you like seeing all kinds of cameos and great talents this movie is awesome.

Where the movie falters, is just about everything else. Most of what happens after a pretty fun and great opening sequence is just total garbage even for a movie trying to top its own ludicrous prequel. We get some decent setup for the big finale and even that just blows. We also get a lot of crap CGI, like even low bar for The Asylum, the kings of low bar craptastic filmmaking. Even the poster is jacked.

Even with its massive amount of flaws, this movie in some ways does top the first installment, if you re-watch both. So having given the first one a 5 out of 7, I have to give this one a lower score. It’s just a slightly worse film in the execution and storyline department. I get that the studio needed to hit while the iron was hot and this series does have 6 movies so far each more out of control than the last, but I really wish we’d have gotten a better plotline with this one and some CGI that was even up to The Asylums level.

This thing gets a 4 out of 7 because it isn’t pretending to be anything other than crazy and it embraces its own outlandish nature. I give extra credit for that.
