EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS (2002)

EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS (2002)

Tagline: The biggest... nastiest... mutant spider movie of all time!!!!

(Action, Adventure, Laughs) [PG-13]

All right! They're spiders from Mars! You happy?

In a small rural town, there is some mining happening. So some of the crap involved in mining has to go somewhere and bam… gigantic spiders the size of cars. When this came out in the theaters I honestly couldn’t even make it to the door fast enough. To this day this is cheesetastic gigantic insect horror at its best.

Not only do we get a decent (and yes definitely cheesy) script, we also get some really top notch acting. There wasn’t a person in this film not trying. David Arquette is perfect in the role of Chris, Kari Wuhrer (ANACONDA, THINNER, SHARKNADO 2: THESECOND ONE as Sheriff Samantha Parker is outstanding and of course this was also one of Scarlett Johansson’s early roles as Ashely Parker who spends most of her time rebelling against her mom in the film.

Most of this is shot in the daylight, but the final climatic scenes are extremely well done and the effects even though we are getting CGI are pretty top notch. There is also a knock down drag out fight behind this lady’s walls that are quite entertaining between a cat and one of the spiders.

While there are certainly elements of horror in this, it is a comedy as well even to where the spiders kind of have their own audible language. Not only is this a great addition to your horror movie marathon, it’s also really freakin fun! It was also filmed in Arizona and I am a sucker for stuff that if filmed in places I live or places I have been.

I give EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS a 6 out of 7. Unless they start making a bunch of 1950's films again, or we somehow slip back into the 80's, this one managed to conjure up the perfect amount of cheese and giant stuff for this movie fan.
