MEGA SHARK VS MECHA SHARK (2014)

MEGA SHARK VS MECHA SHARK (2014)

Okay, on a bit of a shark movie binge, I decided to check this one out. It’s part of the MEGA SHARK series, so it kinda made sense. In this freakin movie, the mega-shark decides to have a little bit of destructive fun in the Port of Alexandria in Egypt. Only this time U.S. Navy and the engineer, Jack Turner (played by Christopher Judge, one of only 2 actors not phoning it in for a paycheck) have come up with an AI-powered huge freakin mechanical shark of their own. Only Judge isn’t going to drive this thing. We are going to leave that in the hands of Rosie (played by Elisabeth Röhm who is probably most famous for her role on The Last Ship). Who is going to win in this epic battle of predator titans?

I will say that I actually liked this movie better than I expected. You always go into "Asylum" movies holding your nose but hoping for a diamond in the rough. It is NOT a masterpiece in any way but the characters Rosie and Jack (also the names of the two main characters in TITANIC) hold this thing together a bit. Both do a pretty good job of acting for a b-movie situation. Unfortunately, everything else about this movie is rough as heck. The mega-shark looks bad, the mecha shark looks iffy, it all looks like it was filmed in someone’s broom closet. Some of the computer graphics are okay, but none of it looks like they put any real effort into it. So far so good oddly enough.

This is a b-movie, I wasn’t expecting a major production like we got with MEG. This movie also has a few funny moments and nods to other films. There is even a scene that kinda pays tribute to something we saw in DEEP BLUE SEA. There is a sequence in this movie where a city is getting destroyed, so that kind of breaks the mold for a shark flick. There is also some decent pacing in the sense that the movie moves along quickly. The run time is less than 90 minutes.

If I was making a list of shark flicks to watch, MEGA SHARK VS MECHA SHARK probably wouldn’t even end up on it. If it did, it would be very low. Maybe watch this thing if you are already invested in the overall series. We do get a Debbie Gibson sighting reprising her role as Emma MacNeil (for fans of Gibson) but be warned, those scenes are ridiculously short.

I have to give MEGA SHARK VS MECHA SHARK a 3 OUT OF 7. Some will say it is worse, but anyone who watches these types of movies knows what’s coming.  The extra point is given for the two leads. They pushed this movie into the “JUST OKAY” zone. It's also big dumb fun and sometimes that is all we need on any given day.
