THE MEG (2018)

THE MEG (2018)

Tagline: Pleased to eat you.

(Action, Sci-Fi, Giant Sharks Will Eat Your Face Off) [PG-13]

Meg versus man isn't a fight... it's a slaughter.

This movie revolves around a billionaire who’s hired a group of scientists to explore the Marianas Trench. They end up in a little over their heads after breaking through an ice barrier. Beneath it is a Megalodon, with a terrible freakin attitude. Because these scientists are pretty clueless on how to do a deep sea rescue,( which is needed after part of their crew get stranded), they hire an A-List action actor to get it done. His name is Jason Statham and he plays Jonas Taylor. Taylor’s attitude is just as bad as the Megalodon’s so these two are gonna have to fight it out…because that’s what you do when you can’t just get along. It doesn’t take long before Suyin takes interest in Jonas and he is gonna be damned if she’s going to die on his watch. After a series of dumb ideas, the Megaldon is on the loose and appears un-freakin stoppable. But don’t worry about that…because Jonas Taylor’s on the job and he eats prehistoric sharks for breakfast.

Apparently, Eli Roth (who I can’t stand 99% of the time) was going to direct this one, but he wanted a rated R film, and to play the lead role Jonas. Thank God that didn’t happen. The dude who did direct THE MEG was Jon Turtelaub who was also responsible for the celebrated tv show Jericho and the evenly paced well done NATIONAL TREASURE : BOOK OF SECRETS among others.

Overall this one starts out a little DEEP BLUE SEA and ends up more like JAWS on crack. The actors are all very good and overall I really enjoyed this thing. The effects are superb and the action sequences are just flat out ludicrous. I love it. Out of the summer “big monsters” movies showdown of 2018, this one came out on top overall for me. It’s not loaded with dumb attempts at humor and by the characters are not only relatable, they are extremely likable.

This is not the best shark movie out there, but it’s in the top 5. For me DEEP BLUE SEA still holds the title, then JAWS. In fact DEEP BLUE SEA is what kept Disney from making this movie back in 1999. If the rumors are true we are getting a MEG 2 at some point down the road. If this was still in the theaters it would be a MUST SEE on the big screen, but for now, just find the biggest TV you can. If you like big stuff attacking things movies, buy this on DVD or BLU-RAY.
