SCOOBY-DOO MYSTERY INCORPORATED: SEASON 1 EPISODE 12 – THE SHRIEKING
MADNESS
In this one Mystery Inc. is actually broken up, the gang
decides to check out a possible college opportunity after High School. So this
one spends time introducing Darrow University and a weekend of craziness
(including things like The Blake Family Center For Self-Named Buildings). For
some nutty reason, no one seems bothered that Scooby is there…so apparently, someday
he’s going to college also.
Daphne ends up meeting a dude and his fellow students who will find anything they can to protest (sound familiar for a college campus). Scooby and Shaggy are looking for an actual burger, but can’t find one because everything at the college is vegan now. Fred is just being Fred hanging out with wrestlers and Velma is fangirling over Harlan Ellison (one of the professors at the college).
The villain in this one is Char Gar Gothikon The Beast That Hath No Name, which is a character from H.P. Hatecraft’s book of the same title. It’s basically like a superhero-looking version of Cthulhu from the H.P. Lovecraft writings 28’. After it attacks Mr. Harlan Ellison the gang decides to put their differences aside and do what they do best…. Track down the villain and solve the mystery of who the heck it really is.

Almost missed it – when you find out who Char Gar Gothikon
is, it almost makes no sense that he tries to kill H.P. Hatecraft after writing
a book about him, but the explanation actually makes sense. However like a lot of episodes in this series
dialog matters.
The animation in this one is pretty great. It’s almost like they were trying to make up for some slight not putting quite as much detail into some earlier episodes.
Best Quote - “And that’s why there hasn’t been anything good
written since the 1970’s” – Mr. Harlan Ellison
Second Best Quote – “My mind is a complete blank” – Fred.
Overall there isn’t much of a mystery here, so that lowers
my score for the episode, sending it into the just better than okay zone.
