STRANGER THINGS: THE WEIRDO ON MAPLE STREET (2016)

STRANGER THINGS: THE WEIRDO ON MAPLE STREET (2016)

STRANGER THINGS takes place in Hawkins, Indiana in 1983. One night on the way home from his friend’s house Will Byers suddenly disappears, and now the town’s coffee and contemplation driven Sheriff Jim Hopper, is going to try to figure out what’s behind it.

In this episode the main kids in the show are just meeting Eleven (played by Millie Bobby Brown known for GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS) after she narrowly escapes some Hawkins Lab employees searching for her. Lucas (played by Caleb McLaughlin) is the most skeptical of the 3, after Mike (played by Finn Wolfhard, one of the coolest acting names ever) decides it’s pretty cool to let Eleven just stay at his house hiding out. A flashback is also used in this episode to show what kind of garbage the creeps at the Hawkins Lab did to Eleven. Oh…and as a result she’s got special powers. She can basically move and crush things with her mind. Like me, before coffee in the morning.

Meanwhile Mike’s sister Nancy (played by Natalia Dyer) decides she is going to a party to hang with her kinda boyfriend Steve. Nancy’s friend Barb (played by Shannon Pusher who also plays a similar character on RIVERDALE, only the RIVERDALE character suddenly became an idiot in Season 3) is dragged along to be a look out but ends up in deep freaking trouble. Sheriff Hopper is becoming increasingly worried about Will and is starting to get all his resources together to try and find him. We also get the impression he’s kind of gigolo, only he’s not getting paid. This episode also flexes Millie Bobby Brown’s acting skills (as Eleven) and likely was around the point where people that didn’t already know she could act…figured it out fast.

Overall this episode just further develops the characters and ramps up the intrigue behind everything that is going on. We also get a spooky introduction to the upside down. It also shows us Mike’s parents are bringing him up right (like 60% of the time, every time), because his ability to related to Eleven is pretty great. Another well shot, well thought out episode even down to some of the intricate details in Hopper’s lines noting that having Will missing, is a bit more intense that being a big city cop…because he knows the person who’s missing. This one gets the same score as episode 1, but it is slightly better than the first episode, which is saying a lot.

One of the coolest things about this episode is that it ends with the song “Hazy Shade Of Winter” by The Bangles. Man, I freakin love that song. Overall the soundtrack on this show is second to none.

Note: I know the graphic below says "movie" but just replace that with the word "episode" in your head and you will be fine.
