SCREAM 2 (1997)

SCREAM 2 (1997)

Tagline: Someone has taken their love of sequels one step too far!

(Horror, Mystery, Mr. Originality) [PG-13]

How do you know that my dimwitted inexperience isn't merely a subtle form of manipulation, used to lower people's expectations, thereby enhancing my ability to effectively maneuver within any given situation?

When you have a massively successful movie you make sure you put out another one as soon as possible and you do it the right way. This is the case with SCREAM 2. SCREAM 2 takes a very real-world view of what would happen if the events of Part 1 happened in real life (2 years later). A movie called STAB is coming out, everyone has masks like the killer, and the events of part 1 are largely dismissed but not forgotten.

If you watched DAWSONS CREEK at all, the dialog pokes fun at shows that are like DAWSON’S CREEK. SCREAM does the same thing, it actually pokes fun at the very insinuations the movie itself either has made or is about to make. This style of writing is very rare for movies in general that are not “really” spoofs or flat-out comedies. I am not going to give away who the killer(s) are but this one is loaded with just as many twists as the first installment.

In this one revenge is a huge factor and motive giving its own existence not only plausibility but substance. One unfortunate thing about this film is the extremely poor soundtrack which was a strong point the first time around.

What we do get is more brilliant casting including Jada Pinkett Smith, Omar Epps, Heather Graham (who is actually in STAB the movie in the movie), Sarah Michelle Gellar, Joshua Jackson (underused, but did show up in CURSED which came out around the same time and was pretty fun in its own right), Timothy Olyphant (one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood), Rebecca Gayheart (epic in URBAN LEGEND), Portia De Rossi and even Laurie Metcalf (probably best known for her role on Rosanne). We also get Neve (Sidney) back which is always KEY in sequels, because this sequel, is all about sequels.

I give this one of 5 out of 7, but only because they threw us a crap soundtrack. Just because it’s the 90s doesn’t mean you can expect us to enjoy a bunch of B-sides no one cares about.
