POINT BREAK (1991)

POINT BREAK (1991)

So looking back, this movie came out the year I graduated from High School. RATT was one of my favorite bands back then if not my favorite, so the only reason I even knew about this movie is because they were on the soundtrack. In spite of that, I still didn’t end up seeing it till this year. Another cool thing about this movie is that it was directed by an actual woman. A lot of people would have you believe that this never happened before WONDER WOMAN came out. This isn’t the case. Kathryn Bigelow has been directing movies since 1981. She’s not just a director, she’s directed some well-respected movies THE HURT LOCKER, ZERO DARK THIRTY and DETROIT for starters.

In this one we basically have an F.B.I. agent named Johnny Utah (played by living legend Keanu Reeves) and man, he’s gotta freakin stop Bodhi (played by legend Patrick Swayze) and his crew from robbing banks, because…dude that is where the money’s at. The F.B.I. will be damned if someone is going to take people’s money unless it’s the IRS.

Bodhi’s crew is a bunch of surfer’s who live for thrills and apparently beer. Except for Tank Girl (Lori Petty who actually plays Tyler because back in the 90’s, last names were expensive so only half the cast go one), she’s all about Johnny Utah and surfing, but she’s falling hard. As the steaks get raised, the normal “let’s rob a bank”, thrill starts to wear off, and Bodhi is starting to slip out of his, “do no harm” mumbo jumbo and into, “don’t get in my way mode”.

As the action and intensity ramps up this movie just gets better and better so it’s easy to see why it’s so respected. Great acting, great action sequences and a good balance of consequence vs risk. This movie made robbing a bank (which today is almost impossible I am sure) stay cool for criminals, well until at least like 2008 when the Joker is still robbing banks in THE DARK KNIGHT. I liked this one quite a bit, but it’s not something you need to run out and buy unless you are really a fan of the director or someone in it or you are suddenly collecting movies about surfing bank-robbers. Speaking of who’s in it, Red Hot Chili Peppers lead singer Anthony Kiedis sneaks his way into this one as the character “Tone”.
