WONDER WOMAN (2017)

WONDER WOMAN (2017)

Tagline: The future of justice begins with her

(Adventure, Fantasy, Wonder Woman Kicking People's Teeth In) [PG-13]

My father told me once, he said, "If you see something wrong happening in the world, you can either do nothing, or you can do something". And I already tried nothing.

I consider myself a MARVEL guy when it comes to film. The comics, I haven’t really been into for a few years now, and even then the titles I found great were few and far between. Now I read 1 DC title “SCOOBY-DOO APOCALYPSE” and the rest of my comic collection has gone strictly indy, where all the superb stuff is coming from these days.

Anyway – back to the review. WONDER WOMAN for me was not an anomaly or some shot in the dark that lit up the DCU. WONDER WOMAN was the perfect prequel to the brilliantly laid out BATMAN VS SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE film. It is an origin story for the ages directed by Patty Jenkins that should be a template used in film school for how to make movies. Lavishly set on Themyscira, everything is pretty hunky-dory until the f----n Nazi’s show up and Captain Kirk (Chris Pine, whose name is actually Steve in the movie) has to let the Amazonians in on the realities of life outside their warrior paradise. Gal Gadot (WONDER WOMAN) has had enough of this crap and decides to take on the god of war because he is definitely behind all this. From beauty to ashes the story takes us on emotional highs and lows.

I can see why some people compared this movie to CAPTAIN AMERICA and it is hard to not come across that in a lot of reviews, but story-telling wise you feel a lot closer to Diana’s crew than you do Captain America’s.  I think that emotional investment as well as the pacing and development of an identifiable female character your daughters can root for made this film spectacular. This is not to dismiss Black Widow but we know less about her after 14 movies than we do WONDER WOMAN after 2.

My only issue with this one was the casting of David Thewlis as Sir Patrick. The first character he played seemed very “in place”, but a late reveal involving Sir Patrick, was about as far off as you would want it to be. Not the actor's fault, it’s just odd casting. Negative reviews on this movie offer little reasoning as to why and just saying that it was a CAPTAIN AMERICA rip off is not only a lazy way of saying you couldn’t think of anything actually wrong but a waste of the review reader’s time.

Just like BATMAN VS SUPERMAN, this movie will still be talked about in 20 years. I haven’t heard anyone even mention CAPTAIN AMERICA outside of comparing it to this movie since a few years after it came out. This coming from someone who loved that movie. For me this is a solid 6 out of 7 without reservation.
