TRICK R TREAT (2007)
Tagline: If you don't follow the rules tonight, you won't live to see tomorrow.
Because you'll bother the neighbors, now go watch Charlie Brown and I'll be in in a minute.
Back in 2007 an instant
classic was born. I missed it and oddly enough, 6 years later I finally got to
check it on LEGENDARY’s screening of the movie. You can get this on DVD
anywhere now but it was never given a wide release the theaters. This one consists
of five interwoven stories (a lot of epic horror
flicks have multiple stories but are rarely interwoven) that occur on the same
street, on the same night. A couple pisses of a little freaky pumkinhead like
creature because they blew out a jack o lantern before midnight. A group of
kids end up in a school bus at the bottom of a ditch. A killer gets a taste of
his own medicine from an unlikely group of gals. Teens take a crazy little
Halloween fan for the ride of her life and a man gets a visit from the freaky
little pumpkinhead-like creature who is really really sensitive about Halloween
tradition.
I can’t say enough about
how much I thoroughly enjoyed this thing and the sets are just fantastic. This
movie is laced with the kinds of things you want in a horror flick but mostly
just provides an intricate creepy factor that sets it apart from most of what
is out there. There is a pretty perfect blend of intensity and almost Twilight
Zone-ish revenge which added to some great performances has made this not only
a cult classic but MUST WATCH Halloween fair for horror fans. Strong
performances are all over this thing, but the stand out for me are Britt
McKillip (basically a jerk in this one, but was in the tv series DEAD LIKE ME
and does a ton of teeny-bobber voice over stuff), Samm Todd (who seems like she
may never make another film again) and Brian Cox (TROY, BRAVEHEART) who is
outstanding in anything he shows up in.
Note – Since 2013 there have been solid rumors of a 2nd installment coming out from director Michael Doughtery who directed GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS, but so far nothing has come of that.
