BIO WEAPON ALPHA (2022)

Tagline: Nope.

(Drama, Sci-Fi, My Eyes) [PG-13]

Note: This movie was never given an MPAA rating, but it would likely get an [PG-13]. This movie was also called PROJECT E.1337: ALPHA.

We're here to discuss a potential project to get us out of this hell hole…

In this one, a biomedical company is going under and they need a Hail Mary to save the company after a bacteria plunged the world into chaos. When a project leader gives them an outlandish idea she is kicked out of the meeting and decides to take matters into her own hands. She then enlists the aid of Dr. Howe to conduct unethical testing in order to create an army of super soldiers. The idea is to have them protect so-called “safe zones” that are coming under increasing attack from a rebellion.

First off this flick is a very short 70 minutes long. If you hang out in B-movie land long enough you start to find a few of these things that might have been optioned for the pilot of a TV show or just had such a low budget even adding another 20 minutes of run time wasn’t an option. This appears to be one of those because apparently, this started out as a TV mini-series shot back in 2014. HIGH OCTANE PICTURES is another studio that cranks out a lot of nonsense but every once in a while you stand a chance of running into something interesting. I think the same can be said for nearly every low-budget studio.

Among the things that go well in this movie is the script. This film is kind of proof that it doesn’t take a giant budget to crank out a script that makes sense. Just watch DUST on a streaming platform and you will see tons of sci-fi that is well-written. Yes, a lot of it is bleak, unfortunately, but the writing is top-notch more often than not. I did think the score was solid and due to how short this thing is, we don’t have to wait a ton of time before things start clicking. I also loved the action sequences, some of them are pretty awesome.

What doesn’t work in a lot of scenes is the acting. We get several portions of the film that seem to work just fine, but other times it seems like this director must have just been tired or something because the performances are flat and uninspired. A good example of this is Shelby Brunn who plays the rogue project leader. She is great in some scenes and in others, it seems like she forgot to drink some coffee or something. That’s the director's fault though. Shelby displays she can act in a lot of these scenes, but in others ugh. It’s a bit frustrating. We do get some scenes where the digital effects are fine but don’t give me crappy CGI explosions when there are so many inexpensive effects suites out there.

As a fair warning, this thing is an incomplete movie and definitely seems like there was more planned for it. I can’t recommend you spend 70 watching this thing because it’s like watching a TV show that was meant to get a second season and never did.

Regarding what we did get this is a 3 out of 7. There is nothing all that special or unique here even though as I mentioned, the script is fine. It kind of sucks that HIGH OCTANE gave us a  movie that doesn’t even feel remotely like a complete story.
