WEDNESDAY : SEASON 1 CHAPTER 4 – WOE WHAT A NIGHT

WEDNESDAY

SEASON 1 CHAPTER 4 – WOE WHAT A NIGHT

In this chapter, Wednesday ends up asking Xavier to go to the Rave’N Dance. Tyler likes her also, and “Thing” isn’t super excited about the Xavier-Wednesday date. Eugene has found a cave that is in one of the drawings Wednesday saw and thinks might be a clue. This cave looks like somewhere you would find a Washington politician hanging out in on the weekends, but Eugene decides to stake it out anyway, against Wednesday’s advice.

This episode features a great contrast of light and dark. The cave in contrast to any scene Enid shows up in and the more playful part of the dance. Eugene also reminds me a lot of what I was like just getting into high school just in the sense that I was nice, but always pining after a girl that was pretty much out of my league. Unlike Eugene though. One day that girl said yes and I was kind of stunned. I didn’t even know what to do. I think we got to the exchanging phone numbers part and I just kind of fell all over myself blowing it. Getting back to the episode though, I love that this isn’t just Wednesday and a bunch of other extremely macabre people. There is a nice blend of different characters I think they can really flesh out over 2 or 3 seasons.

One thing this episode is known for is controversy. Actress Jenna Ortega got blasted by the fear mafia for showing up sick to the dance shoot. She later found out she had Covid and the production was halted till she got better. When you have juggernauts like Disney turning out shows like it’s as easy as making a cup of coffee. I can understand the pressure MGM and Netflix must have been putting on Jenna to keep moving forward regardless. Even if they never came out and said that. Not saying she was right to show up sick, but I can get my head around the pressure to perform. The good news is that no one died, so there isn’t really a need to go back in time and retro-hate on her about it.

Best Line: “I would rather stick needles in my eyes…I’ll probably do that anyway.”- Wednesday

Second Best Line: “They couldn’t even spring for real pig’s blood, it’s only paint.” - Wednesday

Fact – Xavier has the ability to draw things and have the drawings come to life in physical form. We have seen powers like this in movies like COOL WORLD, but I couldn’t tell you the first film or book that introduced the idea.

Fact 2 – There is a shop near Nevermore called Hawte Kewture. Enid would definitely shop there. Wednesday prefers another shop called Uriah’s Heap. Uriah Heap is a character from the Charles Dickens novel “David Copperfield” but the term is most often synonymous with an “insincere flatterer”.  In the show, it’s a clothing store.

Oddity –  Wednesday has a recorder in this chapter but doesn’t use it when it really would have helped later in the series. This makes me wonder if the recorder was actually Eugene’s because he uses one that looks exactly the same in this chapter as well.

This episode is loaded with strong points and I actually really liked that we got to see a bit more of Lucas and Ajax in this one. There is even a bit of background for Xavier and Principal Weems. Not a long drawn-out flashback or anything like that. Just straight-to-the-point scenes and conversation.

For me, this is a strong outing. I have to give this one a 6 out of 7. Even the interaction between Wednesday and Bianca shows character development.
