WEDNESDAY : SEASON 1 CHAPTER 2 –WOE IS THE LONELIEST NUMBER

WEDNESDAY

SEASON 1 CHAPTER 2 –WOE IS THE LONELIEST NUMBER

In this episode Nevermore is hosting its traditional “no rules” Edgar Alan Poe-inspired canoe race called the “Edgar Allen Poe Cup” and Wednesday has been recruited to take part on her roommate Enid’s team “The Black Cats” due to the misfortune of one of the rowers. Wednesday also decides to try and find out the truth about the death of one of her classmates in Chapter 1. She also gets a mysterious visitor from the past.

The special effects are pretty solid. I like what the first episode had to offer, but this one had a bit more to offer at least during the episode. I love that they threw a bit of the storyline to “Thing”. Through 2 episodes “Thing” which is literally just a hand and Enid are my favorite characters.

Acting wise this episode introduces Jamie McShane (THOR) as Sheriff Donovan Galpin, Riki Lindhome (KNIVES OUT) as Dr. Valerie Kinbott, Hunter Doohan (COFFEE HOUSE CHRONICLES) as Tyler Galpin, Joy Sunday (DOG) as Bianca Barclay, Percy Hynes White (THE GIFTED) as Xavier Thorpe, Moosa Mostafa (NATIVITY ROCKS!) as Eugene Otinger, and  Christina Ricci (THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS) as Marilyn Thornhill. For other introductions see Chapter 1.

This episode features some really awesome imaginative ideas that kind of remind me of stuff you would see on an 80s episode of WHEELED WARRIORS or DEATH RACE 2000. This episode also offers another really clever nod to the original series. Outside of the score, this episode also doesn’t feel very Tim Burton-ish. Unless we are talking about the score. The score was definitely perfect. This episode had more going on, but I didn’t really think they did enough with Bianca’s character and Xavier’s character in this. I think a scene or two more with both of them interacting would have helped, but what we got was fine. At least it gave us some background on what is going on between them.

Best Line: “I know, which leads me to believe I’ve been losing my mind. It’s not nearly as fun as I anticipated” - Wednesday

Second Best Line: “I act like I don’t care if people don’t like me, but deep down…I secretly enjoy it.” - Wednesday

Third Best Line: “I’ve always had a thing for werewolf chicks”. - Eugene

Fact – Morticia’s visions as a student at Nevermore were notoriously unreliable and dangerous.

Fact 2 – Bianca runs the choir at Nevermore and is a “Master of The Water”.

Oddity – Nothing really stuck out in this episode. Which is to say that everything did. When everything is odd, nothing is odd.

Pacing and aesthetic wise this episode didn’t come across as dark overall as I thought it might be given the ending of the first episode. It was actually a nice reprieve because great series always have a way of building up over time.

By itself, this is a better episode than Chapter 1 (they don't bother with messaging either way), but I am going to give it the same score as the last one, 6 out of 7.
