ROSE BLOOD: A FRIDAY THE 13TH FAN FILM (2021)
Tagline: Some Fans Love You to Death
(Horror, Mystery, Nostalgia) [R]
Note: This movie never got an MPAA rating, but it would be a [R] due to intense violence.
Because my delusion is right behind you.
In this one, we pick up 13 months after the events of FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VII: THE NEW BLOOD. Tina is being held captive at the Camp Crystal Lake Research Facility. They are working to figure out a way to harness Tina’s power but are getting pressure from General Brackbower to deliver results. He’s also found another girl with a power like Tina named Rose. Rose is even more powerful than Tina, but the goal that the General has in mind is the capture of Jason Voorhees.
First off, one thing I did not like about this fan film is the acknowledgment of characters in JASON GOES TO HELL. Literally, a movie so bad I rarely acknowledge it exists and honestly wish someone would make a movie that writes off both JASON GOES TO HELL and FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VIII: JASON TAKES MANHATTAN. If I was going to script out the new FRIDAY THE 13TH installment, I would have Jason re-emerging from the lake at the end of part VII being spurred by dreams made up of scenes from parts VIII and JASON GOES TO HELL, to explain that both films were literally in Jason’s head and never happened. Yes, that is how garbage both movies were.
Anyway, looking at some of the strong points in this one, I liked how Jessica Hottman took on the role of Tina Shepard in this. Her mannerisms are good for the role, but I think it would have been good if they had tricked out her hair a bit more to make it look more like Tina’s from FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VII: THE NEW BLOOD. Sanae Loutsis does a good job as Rose. She’s actually been in 3 FRIDAY THE 13TH fan films as two different characters (she plays Ashley Jarvis in the FRIDAY THE 13TH VENGENCE series). Lar Park-Lincoln does a great job in the (now) roles as Tina Shepard and we also get a pretty decent performance out of Terry Kiser who reprises his role as Dr. Crews (in kind of a “in Tina’s head) moment. My favorite character in the film is Julian Dominguez played by Joseph Caban, a kind janitor who tries to help Tina and Rose. Caban was actually the co-Producer on FRIDAY THE 13TH VENGENCE and FRIDAY THE 13TH VENGENCE BLOODLINES: PART II. Another thing I liked about this movie was the score. They kept throwing a bit of both FRIDAY THE 13TH and HALLOWEEN hints in. The design work on Jason’s look was phenomenal. This movie also has a couple of awesome surprises in the final half-hour.
Where this movie is a bit overkill is how often they show the characters playing 1980s video games. I am pretty sure we don’t see anyone playing video games that aren’t handheld in the OG series. It's not a big deal, but it's more distracting than anything in this one. It is also pretty janky how you are going to do a FRIDAY THE 13TH fan film that doesn’t have Jason in it until 64 minutes in. That is why when people complain about how little Michael Myers was in HALLOWEEN ENDS, it’s like…sure, but you didn’t have to wait an hour to see him. On the flip side, when he does show up, it’s pretty out of control.
Overall the way this thing wraps up makes it the best Fan Film I’ve seen thus far, but of course, I’ve only seen 3, so it’s not saying much. For the final 30 minutes alone, I have to give this thing a 6 out of 7. It’s extremely well done. I just want to see a return to the forest part of the camp at some point. With any luck maybe there will be a continuation of this storyline?
