VIRUS SHARK (2021)

VIRUS SHARK (2021)

Tagline: Something deadly is plaguing these waters.

(Sci-Fi, Horror, Shark Movie Garbage)[PG]

Note: the MPAA did not give this movie a rating. It would likely have been a PG due to a few instances of profanity.

I don’t get paid enough for this crap.

In this one, a shark picks up a virus that ends up spreading across the globe. The world descends into chaos and the one last hope for mankind is for an underwater research facility (called CYGNUS) to come up with a cure. They are using infected sharks to try and come up with a cure. It doesn’t take long before sharks are wreaking havoc on the facility and multiple workers have also become infected by a test pool shark.

It’s pretty obvious they weren’t going to quality here. The acting is horrifying, the effects are laughable, and the script is rough as hell. Even the make-up work looks like it was done by toddlers. Not saying any of this was on purpose, but it has the result of making this movie pretty damn funny in the vein of VELOCIPASTOR. I do wish they had thrown some humor in here to kind of play off how nutty this whole thing is. There is an internet claim out there that the budget for this entire movie was $182 dollars. I doubt that is accurate, but if you can picture what that would be like, you can get an idea of the “terrible-level” this movie has to offer. One of the few things SHARKULA did right is making the body parts look at least “campy horror”. This movie gives us bloodless mannequin parts.

This is stuff for the total nonsense file on this one.  There is a scene where Duke gets bitten by a shark and there is no blood on his arm. A few scenes later, his arm is bleeding like crazy. There is also one shot of the sharks and instead of looking diseased, they just put some actual digitally rendered virus graphics on top of the shark graphics. In other shots, we get terrible-looking CGI sharks, but at least they “look” infected like you would expect. We also have a scene where Kristi wakes up after floating ashore after being in the ocean. Her clothes are completely dry and her hair is done (must be nice). That is about all I want to cover here, but you could probably make another movie just on how bonkers and hilariously bad this one is.

Jaime Morgan (who plays Kristi) I am sure is an amazing person, but I think this script was too much for her at the time. To her credit, she does do a better job in the second half of this movie than she does in the first half. A lot of her lines and Titus Himmelberger’s (who plays Gregory McLandon) seemed like the script was just tough for them to even pronounce much less come across like they were the characters they were playing. This one is also an even rougher outing for Ken Van Sant who plays Duke. It’s the first time I have seen him in something and really couldn’t stand his character or his acting, not even trying to watch it comically.

When it comes to the POLONIA BROTHERS ENTERTAINMENT, they are pumping out the worst shark crap out there. This one however isn’t actually associated with that studio. This one is just directed by Mark Polonia on his own it appears. Some bad shark movies do find ways to at least be hilariously bad and depending on what mood you are in, that can be entertaining. Unfortunately for me, this movie is just not coherent enough to give anything more than a 1 out of 7. If you want to watch a terrible terrible movie just to laugh at the badness, even then you might be disappointed. The level of “suck” is strong with this one.
