THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER (2022)

In this one, Thor leaves the “Asgardians Of The Galaxy” after putting a beating on some aliens, when he finds out that Gorr the “god butcher” is killing every god he can find. He decides to build his own team to take down Gorr which involves Valkyrie, Korg, and Jane Foster who mysteriously now possesses the power of Thor herself. Can Thor stop the god butcher before he ends all gods for all time?
First off, when I read how terrible this movie was I was very much in denial. In fact, there are dozens and dozens of movies I love that everyone else seems to hate. With THOR: RAGNAROK under his belt I really felt that director Taika Waititi was going to knock this out of the park. Did he?
Here is what works in THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER. The score is fantastically 80’s and early 90’s and I loved that. It features 4 total Guns & Roses songs, 3 of which are off Appetite For Destruction. The other thing was throwing in these crazy screaming goats Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder. I also liked that we got a huge dose of Valkyrie fighting again. She’s a really cool character and she’s living up to her potential in the last couple of appearances. We also get at least 4 minutes of the Guardians Of The Galaxy characters Groot, Mantis, Peter, Kraglin, Nebula, Rocket, and Drax. What I also thought was a strong part of the movie was the villain story. Gorr’s backstory was fantastic as was Christian Bale in the role. We also get some crazy good special effects in parts of this movie that I thought was pretty epic. It was also pretty awesome that many of Chris Hemsworth’s family members were in this movie. His wife even plays a past girlfriend. It might be bad luck or whatever, but it’s cool that he got them involved.
Where this movie falls off the freakin cliff is in its introduction to the gods. Almost every movie I have seen regarding the gods including GODS OF EGYPT did a far better job with this aspect. There isn’t a single moment in the big “Thor meets Zeus” scene that isn’t totally idiotic in the worst way possible. There is a great chasm between humor and idiocy. If it was possible to die from cringe just from one character Russell Crowe’s Zeus in this movie is it. I also thought it was pretty much overkill that Thor in this movie is given another super random power. I won’t go into what it was and the scene was actually pretty cool, but it didn’t make any damn sense in light of any of the other Marvel movies. We also had too many parts where the CGI looked very Hallmark Channel Christmas Special and didn’t match the rest of the movie's effects. THOR: RAGNAROK gave us an amazing blend of comedy and seriousness that this film dispenses within the first 5 minutes. Jane Foster (played by Natalie Portman) is given the crappiest most depressing backstory since Quill’s mom in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. This movie is like watching a boogeyman horror flick with the worst episode of Portlandia, and a Charmin toilet paper commercial thrown in the middle. The result is a super un-even movie that was destined to be a huge letdown from the previous film in the series.
So the answer is no. Sadly, and it hurts to say this, THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER in spite of some really cool story ideas are not nearly as good as THOR: RAGNAROK. It feels like 4 or 5 different people were writing this and only one of them nailed all the parts they wrote. Everyone else was just making it up as they went. I really wanted to love this thing more and didn’t.
Even with all that, there is enough good in this thing to warrant adding it to your Marvel movie collection, but it’s not worth the price to see it in theaters. For me, this is a disappointing 4 out of 7 and I really really wanted to love it.
