GODS OF EGYPT (2016)

GODS OF EGYPT (2016)

Okay so this thing just got pummeled at the box office and by critics. Unfortunately, movie goer reaction to films like this is why Hollywood puts out so many “safe” movies. Either really boring low budget crap, sequels or remakes. GODS OF EGYPT is about “Set”, the god of deserts, storms, disorder and violence (played by Gerard Butler from 300) who decides he wants the power of all the gods, and to take over the world and to date the goddess “Hathor”. He’s basically tired of desert stuff. He ends up stealing one of his brother Horus’s (played by Nikolaj Costor-Waldau from Game of Thrones) eye’s and hiding it. Yeah just picture your eye getting stolen, that is how this thing goes down. To save the world and his girlfriend Zaya (played by Courtney Eaton from MAD MAX FURY ROAD), a boy named Bek (played by Brenton Thwaites) is out to tip the scales back in the favor of balance and night time demon fighting. Yeah, nighttime demon fighting happens in this damn thing too.

From the opening scene to the final frame, I pretty much love this freakin thing. I mean you have giant snakes, flying creatures, a giant living Sphinx, it’s just completely out of control. I felt the cinematography was fantastic and the overall story was just really fun and well told. Where there was a bit of a let-down, is in some of this movie was the CGI work. Unfortunately flying Horus and flying Set as well as the backgrounds looked very “video gamefish” and not in a good way. Other scenes were really strong and gave this thing plenty of punch. Overall this whole thing is just a mind-blowing spectacle.

When I think of Gerard Butler I normally go straight to how great he was in 300, but I thought he was the perfect antagonist in this. We even get some super hero sightings in this movie with Chadwick Boseman (BLACKPANTHER) playing the smartest god in history, “Thoth”. Then we have Elodie Yung from Daredevil playing the goddess “Hathor”. Every performance in this movie is awesome. It’s just a ton of fun. I probably watch this thing at least twice a year.

You can listen to the haters if you want or the pc crowd that hated the casting for a movie featuring “Egyptians”, but if you can get past that issues and watch this as just being a movie... you have an amazing guilty pleasure on your hands. For me GODS OF EGYPT is like watching everything rad about the Egyptian gods come to life. For that alone it gets a solid 7 OUT OF 7.
