THOR : RAGNAROK (2017)

THOR: RAGNAROK (2017)

Tagline: Thunder Will Reign.

(Action, Comedy, A Giant Freakin Wolf) [PG-13]

I can't turn away anymore. So, if I'm gonna die, well, it might as well be driving my sword through the heart of that murderous hag.

In this one, Thor is trapped by Surtur who looks like the freakin devil, and Thor explains a bit about how he got there before attempting an escape. Surtur's main goal is to destroy Asgard because he's a jerk. Meanwhile, his adopted brother and part-time villain are residing over Asgard by taking on the likeness of Odin. Hela (Thor's long-lost sister whose been exiled) also pretty suddenly shows up and now Thor has to deal with that. On top of that of course Asgard’s very existence is at stake.

I think when I heard the title of this we were going to get another hum-drum serious Marvel movie, but no. This one is more in the ANT-MAN vein humor-wise and is loaded with over-the-top concepts. Like a giant wolf, the Hulk is on a trash planet fighting in an arena. We get introduced to an awesome character named Valkyrie and Heimdall (played by Idris Elba) is given a lot more to do in this one than in previous films. Even Doctor Strange shows up in this thing.

Out of all the Marvel movies to date, this is in my top 5. It’s both serious and fun, well-rounded, and takes the entire MCU to a whole new level. Cate Blanchett is as epic as Hela and she steals every scene she is in. Tessa Thompson is also very strong in the role of Valkyrie. There really isn’t anything I didn’t love about this movie. Even some of the more controversial moments didn’t bother me at all. I actually thought they were fine and brought levity to the situation being presented in the movie.

The direction, set designs, CGI, and cinematography were freaking brilliant along with the overall storyline. I think in part I was hoping for a lighter ending, given the way the story was told but it also serves to set up the storyline of future films. Chris Hemsworth as Thor is how I will always remember the role no matter who takes his place with the hammer, and this effort is no exception. He looks to be enjoying himself immensely. If you liked the tone of either of the Guardians Of The Galaxy movies, then this one is for you. I give THOR: RAGNAROK a 7 out of 7.
