DESTINATION: OUTER SPACE (2010)

Tagline: The Most Astounding Spectacle To Ever Grave The Silver Screen!

(Sci-Fi, Adventure, Bossy Robots) [PG]

Note – This movie did not originally have an MPAA rating, but I am pretty sure it would have been a PG.

In this one Captain Mike Jackson is doing a test flight for a new rocket prototype at FTL (faster than light) speed. An anomaly occurs that throws him across the galaxy and he ends up lost in deep space. In his effort to get back he runs into a robot that will only help him if he can fight off alien creatures with giant eyeballs for heads, determined to take over the galaxy!

First off, as cool as some of the concepts in this movie are, it’s probably my least favorite in the entire “Mihmverse”. The “Mihmverse” or “Mihmiverse” is a collection of now over 14 full-length movies and other shorter films with 2 in the works. films directed by Christopher R. Mihm. He is actually in this one as the voice of A.D.A.M. which is a pretty crazy-looking robot that ends up delivering a huge portion of the movie's dialog.

The execution I think is where I have most of the issue with this movie and probably the fact that Josh Craig is in it, but he’s not playing Professor Jackson like he does in IT CAME FROM ANOTHER WORLD!. Captain Jackson is basically Professor Jackson's son or at least that is how I interpreted it, but both are played by Josh Craig. By the way, this was Josh Craig’s 4th and final “Mihmverse” film at least so far.  That would normally be fine, but I thought it just didn’t work in this movie. Secondly, Captain Jackson just isn’t all that likable. So we end up with another one of these movies where you can’t find a character to root for.

What I did like about this movie was the eyeball aliens and a cantina scene that kind of resembles the cantina scene in STAR WARS. Outside of that, the ship designs are just okay and I would put a lot of the rest of this film in the just-okay category.

Acting-wise all these films are pretty fun and I think the acting style is deliberate so I am not going to bash this one. We do get Catherine Hansen who plays Yureena Null who is a bit of a pirate character. We also get Shannon McDonough who has like Catherine Hansen has been involved in 5 “Mihmverse” films to date as the voice of the “computer” in this one. I think giving her some screen time would have helped this movie because there was no one to play off Captain Jackson for a good chunk of this thing when the movie was trying to ramp things up.

Because this is sci-fi and because it’s Christopher freakin Mihm the king of the rebirth of the 50s style sci-fi the worst rating I can give this movie is a 3 out of 7. Just the fact that they keep making these things makes the world a better place. Not like Jesus Christ or anything (I don’t say that sarcastically, this world needs Jesus), but for sci-fi fans, there is some unparalleled awesomeness coming out of the “Mihmverse” (also called the "Mihmiverse" in fact I might be the only person out there leaving out the "i").
