THEY CAME FROM BEYOND SPACE (1967)

THEY CAME FROM BEYOND SPACE (1967)

Tagline: They turn women into robots ... enslave men ... and make cities into places of terror!

(Adventure, Sci-Fi, Mind Control) [PG]

Note – This movie did not originally have an MPAA rating, but the DVD release in 2012 was given a [PG] so there you have it.

Why that's impossible! No propulsion system on Earth could possibly send a rocket to the Moon and back in 24 hours.

In this one meteorites land in a rural English farm in a V-formation. Upon going to study it, those in close proximity are taken over by what seems like alien mind control, and others are subjected to something called “the crimson plague” which just looks like really bad acne. One man named Dr. Curtis Temple seems to be completely immune to both the powers of the unknown. Will he discover the aliens and the secret of why these scientists’ minds have been taken over when clearly that is only allowed by special interest groups and creepy organizations with large sums of money paying for a very specific result?

First off, this movie is not nearly as bad as some of the reviews for it. I was actually pretty intrigued by it throughout its run time but the ending is a bit too fairytale for this movie, given the amount of death and turning everyone into space workers.

Fact: In 1969 it took the Apollo 11 3 days just to get to the moon. In 2006, NASA’s New Horizon spacecraft made it to the moon in 8 hours and 35 minutes, but trying to land on it requires slower speeds and more time to get there.

A lot of sci-fi flicks are plagued with terrible scores that seem like they were made my kids challenged to make the most annoying sounds they could, but this one isn’t that bad. I also didn’t mind the sets, but they are a bit simplistic. I guess they were actually leftover from DALEKS’ INVASION OF EARTH 2150 A.D. What very few effects we get in the movie are also fine, but they are 1950’s fine, not 1967 fine. The design work overall left much to be desired.

Acting-wise the only real stand out is Robert Hutton (probably best known for THE SLIME PEOPLE) who plays Dr. Curtis Temple. I don’t want to say that Jennifer Jayne (best known for THE CRAWLING EYE) wasn’t good as Lee Mason, but she plays the role very robotically which was probably the goal, but I don’t think it is hard to do. Zia Mohyeddin is fairly solid as the comic relief as “Farge”, not really in his lines, but how his helmet looks. The rest of the performances are just okay.

Overall I did not hate this movie, but I highly doubt I will be seeking to ever watch it again. As much as I liked Robert Hutton in this, there just wasn’t enough going on and the plot ended up not doing this film any favors.

I give THEY CAME FROM BEYOND SPACE a 4 out of 7. It is better than most of the reviews for it.
