ROBOT HOLOCAUST (1987)

ROBOT HOLOCAUST (1987)

Tagline: It's machine vs. man in the ultimate battle for the future!

(Sci-Fi, B-Movie, Don’t Try This At Home) [PG]

Note – This movie was not rated. Had it be rated by the MPAA, I can safely assume it would have been PG. It did get released theatrically in Italy, but that doesn’t help us with the MPAA rating issue.

In this one, a clumsy band of hero’s try’s to rescue a scientist that is being held by a computerized villain simply known as “The Dark One” who is guarded by an army of robots in an apocalyptic world. “The Dark One” controls everyone via the amount of air that is available to them. In the movie, they are referred to as “air slaves”.

First off this movie seems to borrow a bit from STAR WARS just in the sense that the main robot that is on the good side is basically an annoying C3PO-type character. After that, it’s all just kind of nuts. The heroes run into a race of what is basically an Amazon woman and get some help from one of them but it’s something she does super reluctantly. It’s almost as if her power in the movie is the unceasing ability to complain about men. The scientist's daughter is also pretty ungrateful after everything the group of heroes goes through just to try and save her father.

When it comes to the effects I pretty much knew this was a low-budget movie to start with, but we actually do get a few decent-looking characters. “The Dark One’s” main android robot looks pretty epic like it was designed to be a bit of a crawdad-type crustacean creature. It has arms and legs that would be close to human size, but the head is just bonkers. There are also some cool designs when our heroes are attacked by wall-dwelling sewer worms. Unfortunately, most of the other designs are terrible. A lot of the costumes seem like they would have been better suited for a barbarian movie, not a post-apocalyptic movie.

It really seems like they enrolled Angelika Jager because they found her attractive. She literally had only one other acting role aside from this one and it was a small part. The main actor Norris Culf who plays a character named Neo has only been in 3 films. The other two were also low-budget trash cinema, (trash being the operative word).  If you are into movies like this, they are not trash at all, but Tim Kincaid is actually mostly known for terrible films. Jennifer Delora plays Nyla who is the daughter of the scientist in the movie. She is actually still acting, but like most everyone else in this movie has mostly done low-budget projects, (literally, movies that cost like $125.00 bucks and a box of pizza to make).

The ’80s had a giant stack of b-movies to choose from, especially in the direct to video space. I grew up with a friend named Clayton that was into all this stuff, so we had a blast checking a lot of them out. This one I had never actually seen prior to recently. All I can say is in spite of a few decent ideas, the execution is overwhelmingly bad as is the acting. Even a few good designs couldn’t save this freakin thing.

I have to give this one a 2 out of 7. Do not run to see it. Nothing even remotely as cool as the artwork for the DVD cover is even in this thing.
