THE FINAL GIRLS (2015)

THE FINAL GIRLS (2015)

Tagline: Who will survive?

(Horror, Comedy, Let's Go To The 80's) [PG-13]

I can't believe we're just gonna casually watch someone get murdered, what is this Detroit?

In this one, when Max (played by Taissa Farmiga) and her friends are kind of dragged into seeing a screening of her mom’s old 80’s horror flick, all hell and humor breaks loose after an accident at the theater, ends up with them being sucked into the movie itself. Welcome to "Camp Bloodbath" where every line is smothered with delicious 80’s cheese and the body count rises as fast as the tension. Who will be the final girl?

This movie has brilliant performances from Taissa Farminga and Malkin Akerman (who plays Nancy but is probably best known for her role in WATCHMEN). THE FINAL GIRLS also has over-the-top but perfectly executed acting via, Alia Shawkat is awesome in this as Gertie. If you don’t know who she is, she’s been in over 80 projects so far, but might be best known for being “Pash” from WHIP IT. We also get Nina Dobrev (from The Vampire Diaries as Viki Summers), Pretty Little Liars veteran Chloe Bridges (who plays Paula). Adam Devine from Pitch Perfect (as Kurt), Alexander Ludwig from Vikings (as the protective Chris Briggs). I mean this cast is just fantastic. What also really works is the on-screen chemistry and I loved the fact that you can tell they are just having a blast.

This thing plays out like something out of Blockbusters horror section your mom gave you dirty looks for going into, only in many cases far better. One thing I did enjoy as a little twist of sorts, is the character who ends up being the original 80’s movie “Final Girl” is not who I would have pegged. I think the supposedly coolest chick in both NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3 and 4 ends up dying, and the most bad a-s chicks in a lot of the FRIDAY THE 13th series end up dying. The final girl is usually someone you wouldn’t at first expect. “Camp Bloodbath” doesn’t go that route and I found that interesting. So just to ask…are there any bad a-s girls that survived the movie in the 80’s…or is it always the “other one”? Discuss among yourselves, but then finish reading this.

Cinematically this thing is top-notch and pays its dues in celebrating everything that is 80’s slasher horror. I will say the slower parts are noticeable but they really enrich this movie putting it into a category all its own. We really care about these characters. The lighting and photography are also just really mesmerizing. The main villain in this thing is just spot-on menacing. He’s definitely a throwback to what we loved about horror flicks in the 80’s.

What the freakin cow…how did I miss this damn thing? Wow. Sorry, but I am just going to come right out and say that I don’t know if it’s possible for me to love this movie any more than I do. For straight-up fans of the 80’s slasher genre, this thing is a love letter like very few others. It’s a cinematic accomplishment that is just flat-out epic. The ending is also really fun!

I can’t give this thing any less than a 7 OUT OF 7. I watched this movie twice in 2 nights and ended up buying it.
