THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA : PRINCE CASPIAN (2008)
Tagline : Everything you know, is about to change
In this one four children a year old than in the first movie are sucked into a train station portal back into Narnia. The only problem now is that its centuries later in Narnia and everything has changed. The Narnian’s have been driven into hiding and the land is now ruled by Prince Caspian’s deceptive and sinister uncle Miraz. Prince Caspian (played by Ben Barnes known for SEVENTH SON) is now leading a small band of old Narnia’s against the largest most well equip army the land has ever seen. King Peter (played by William Mosley), King Edmund (played by Skandar Keynes), Queen Lucy (played by Georgie Henley) and Queen Susan (played by Anna Popplewell) join the fight against the army and against the temptations of dark magic. There are also freakin griffins in this damn movie, so that alone makes is mind-blowing.
While this installment does include some awesome storyline involving how Narnia got how it is now and involving Prince Caspian and why he is a problem for Miraz, it’s mostly a military strategy movie. Only the military battles in this movie involve humans, dwarves, elk, giants, bears, minotaur’s, fawns, mice, griffins etc. Did I mention the griffins, because they are freakin awesome. There are also some scenes that are just epic and probably would have made any military strategist jealous if we still fought like we were in the middle ages. The acting is pretty amazing all around in this movie and Ben Barnes is perfect as Prince Caspian. For instance Sergio Castellitto who doesn’t do a ton of American films, is brilliant in this as Miraz. Like literally award worthy. Warwick Davis is also in this and does a pretty stellar job as well.
I do have a few issues with this movie. One being that I think it could have used a shorter duel scene between Peter and Miraz. That scene seems to take forever and dragging it out adds nothing to the overall movie aside from serving as a stall scene to give Lucy more time to get help. I also would have taken out all the scenes at the Narnian stronghold involving the bear. I mean, I don’t mind the bear being there I guess, but having him talk and react the way he does seems really out of place. Even the jaguars and panthers are more composed.
I don’t know if PRINCE CASPIAN is a better movie than THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE, but it’s pretty well done and it’s definitely up there. The last 45 minutes or so especially are pretty spell-binding involving attack trees and vines just whipping around jacking up everything. It’s freakin epic.
For me this is another 7 out of 7 rating. There isn’t enough here to complain about that the effort, score, cinematography, and world building is outstanding.
