SUPER SHARK (2011)

SUPER SHARK (2011)

In this one an offshore drilling accident releases a giant shark exactly like in MEG and at least one other shark movie, only this time an agent used to soften the bottom of the ocean is used, and that opens the cavern of doom in the deepest depths of our CGI nightmares. So the underlying unnecessary PC theme of this one is that oil drilling is bad. Got that kids? This shark is a bit different, insert whacky nonsense science here and presto, this thing flies and can walk on land. A biologist Kat Carmichael (played by b-movie frequent flyer Sarah Lieving) shows up to try and sue the oil company, but also to try and save beach goers. Roger Wade (played by John Schneider) who runs the oil company is trying to find ways to stop Kat because of money. Kat gets help from a skipper named Chuck played by Tim Abell and the military. So that is pretty much what’s going on in this thing.

Overall the look of the shark in this thing is just okay. That is just one area I always take into account when rating shark movies. It’s not totally horrible, but it’s not as well done as many other shark flicks. Acting wise everyone is pretty much b-movie level with the exception of Tim Abell who can actually act. Even John Schneider for all of his accomplishments, just isn’t that great in this. That said, the script is mostly bad and the plot is barely holding this thing together.

Where the major issues with this movie come in are the parts where they try to appeal to a male audience by throwing a bikini contest into the mix, with some shameless photography parts that just feel ridiculously out of place. I seriously can’t stand any of it. We also get an odd character in the form of Dynamite Stevens (played by Jimmie Walker from the TV show “Good Times”).  Let’s just put it this way, Jimmie’s talents were put to better use as the wind shield wiper in AIRPLANE! than as a DJ in this damn movie. You are better than this Jimmie.

Having said all that, if you can get past some of the more cringe-worthy scenes in this flick there are some decent action shots and the shark, like I said, it okay. Okay in a b-movie is actually not half bad. We also get a really goofy looking tank that walks on 4 legs for no apparent reason, so there’s that. While this movie is kind of forgettable it’s not as horrifying as some of the reviews. It’s actually a little bit fun at times. Just not fun enough to get a good rating out of me. If you are going to be bad, you have to be at least fun-bad.

I give SUPER SHARK a 2 out of 7. A decent plot, dialog, some better efforts out of the actors and the replacement of certain scenes with better ones, could have made this worth a second watch and bumped it up to a 3 or 4. For most of us…that isn’t going to happen.
