KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE (1977)

OH man, this movie is out of freakin control. It’s basically a series of short skits and what are essentially commercials. The biggest section in the movie is a short called “Fist Full Of Yen” which spoofs pretty much every martial arts flick of the 70’s. These days there are not a ton of these types of movies even out there, but I kind of think of it as Saturday Night Live with a giant budget and a hard “R” rating. I would even think if the movie came out these days, it would have gotten an NC-17 rating.
The movie is directed by AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON director John Landis. The movie also has a bunch of stars from the 70’s and earlier, but some of the most notable are Tony Dow and Jerry Mathers from “Leave It To Beaver”, Donald Sutherland, Bill Bixby and Henry Gibson among others. Featuring skits like “Catholic School Girls In Trouble” the movie does have its fair share of over the top nudity and utter nonsense. So from that standpoint, this movie unlike AIRPLANE, AIRPLANE II, NAKED GUN and TOP SECRET probably has a much narrower audience. I have always liked this movie, but anyone hoping for a pc outing needs to skip this one. I mean just run from it. KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE doesn’t’ care about offending anyone and it’s pretty balls to the wall throughout making fun of just about everything, no holds barred.

Because the direction is purposely satire and spoof, it’s hard to really give this thing a high rating based on film quality, cinematography or acting for the most part. So when I am watching this thing I am just looking at it overall not for each individual skit. Some are drop on the floor and roll around funny and some you just can’t wait to end. For that reason, even though parts of this thing still hold up and still crack me up, we are looking at a 4 out of 7 here.
