DEMON WITH THE ATOMIC BRAIN (2017)

DEMON WITH THE ATOMIC BRAIN (2017)

Tagline: This is how the universe dies!

(Sci-Fi, Suspense, Eyeball Machine) [PG]

Note – This movie did not originally have an MPAA rating, but I am pretty sure it would have been a PG.

Oh boy, so in this one there is a group of scientists working to make a weapon that can open portals to other worlds. It’s basically a STRANGER THINGS “11” type power only it’s a machine. The attempt goes badly and instead they end up fracturing space-time and each apparent way out is actually just another way in….to madness (insert sinister laugh here). As our scientists (or specialists) continue to try and evade each new sinister alternate reality, they begin to realize there is a force working against them.

To this point, I think I have only reviewed 1 movie from Christopher R. Mihm. That’s unfortunate because this dude is bringing back the 50s and 60’s like they were going out of style. Don’t believe me, stop reading this and watch THE HORROR OF PARTY BEACH or FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE SPACE MONSTER and tell me, that Mihm isn’t nailing this stuff. Anyway – with every director you are going to get some hits and misses and for me, this one is just a bit underwhelming. This movie is in black and white and doesn’t seem like it’s meant to not just satire the sci-fi flicks of the 50s and 60s, but to honor them.

Where the film goes awry for me is a sequence in one of the realities where our fearless protagonists run into a group of cannibalistic cultists. Not only does this section slow the film down, but the cannibals themselves also seem almost like they weren’t queued into what is going on in this movie. The scene is also extremely out of place given that the rest of the way we are treated to giant Venus flytraps, jellyfish dudes, tree monsters, and other rad stuff. Having said all that the film successfully does what it sets out to accomplish and I love that about this thing. Come to think of it, I hated the cannibal scene in the original DREDD movie also. So, I think I just can’t stand cannibal stuff.

Anyway – most of the acting is genre spot on and the sets are amazingly sci-fi trash heap. It’s freakin awesome. This one doesn’t drag out like THE MONSTER FROM PHANTOM LAKE, but --- I have to give it a 4 out of 7. The plot is just a bit overly convoluted as well as repetitive in a few scenes where it didn't really need to be.
