AVATAR (2009)

AVATAR (2009)

I have a bit of a love hate relationship with James Cameron. He is one of those directors where I love some of his films and absolutely can’t stand others. This one, is one for the ages. I honestly doubt there are very many people on the planet who don’t know about this movie. It was also my son’s favorite movie from 2009-2014. In that year, CAPTAIN AMERICA : WINTER SOLDIER became his new favorite movie and that was replace 2 years later by MISS PEREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN. I think it might be BLACK PANTHER now, but I digress.

This movie is about a planet that has a mineral that a big company wants and they are basically using a paraplegic space Marine to talk the tribes of a planet called Pandora, into just letting them have it. At stake is a giant tree (kidding, it's an entire civilization). The movie is loaded with world building and crazy looking creatures and rad looking military machinery. The movie also does a great deal of soul searching to really bring us some important questions about the price of advancement and our relationship with nature.

Acting wise everyone plays this thing pretty straight and some of the best performances are actually coming from characters rarely on screen. CCH Pounder is awesome as Mo’at, Michelle Rodriguez stands out ad Trudy Chacon and Wes Studi as Eytukan shines. This is not to say the other actors and actresses didn’t rock this thing. I will say that Sam Worthington as Jake Sully doesn’t come across as likable at first, but his character develops over time and that is something the script does a great job with as the story plays out. Zoe Saldana does a great job as Neytiri as well, but plays a character I have a hard time relating to given her relationship with Jake Sully.

Even by today’s standards the effects in this thing are just incredible, but the movie overall does have a bit of an ALITA : BATTLE ANGEL feel, in the sense that it feels like watching a giant CGI video game. So if you don’t like CGI, you are going to need to get rid of that hang-up like last week. This is also one of those movies where you might want to go to the bathroom first, because just the regular version clocks in at 2 hours and 42 minutes. There is also a 2 hour and 3 hours and 11 minute version. To this movies credit however, it doesn’t feel that long at all. There is an excellent balance between action sequences and more emotional dialog driven scenes.

Avatar is one of those movies I never even think about putting in the Blu-Ray or DVD player. It just goes in there and does its thing. There is a ton to say about this movie, but I like to keep these things short. I give AVATAR a 7 out of 7. If you don’t own it, get it on the best format you can find.
