PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN : THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL (2003)

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL (2003)

Tagline: Prepare To Be Blown Out Of The Water…

In this one the story is set in an era where villainous pirates scavenged the Caribbean seas. This roller coaster tale teams a young man, Will Turner, with an unlikely ally in pirate Jack Sparrow (who mostly appears to be out for himself, but has some redeeming qualities as well). Together, they must battle a band of the world’s most treacherous (I like using the word treacherous because it reminds me of The Goonies) pirates, led by Captain Barbossa, in an order save Elizabeth (played by actress Kiera Knightley), as well as recover a lost treasure that Jack seeks. Against all odds they race towards a thrilling, climatic confrontation on the mysterious Isla de Muerta. Will and Jack attempt to recapture the Black Pearl ship, evade the British Navy (who is really pissed at them for this entire movie), and actually put back treasure which would lift a curse that dooms the crew of the Black Pearl to turn into insatiable skeletons in the moonlight.

The story moves along at a pretty good clip, however there are a few slower moving parts and a few entire scenes that give you kind of a “didn’t we just do this?” feeling. Unlike its sequels is fairly “effects free” aside from the moments where Barbossa’s crew is zombified skeletons. We don’t get any giant creatures or octopus faces. This movie is the best “written” of the series just for the mere induction of the pirate language. It is almost as if the film takes us back in time which does it’s job delivering a pirate film to be remembered.

Johnny Depp is perfect as Jack Sparrow and probably actually makes the movie all by himself. The cast is good as well and hiring Geoffery Rush for your film is never a mistake. I actually spent a lot of DEAD MANS CHEST wishing he’d show up somehow. This is one of those movies you can watch over and over possessing a balance of humor, love, danger and adventure. The movie also prompted several changes to the Pirates Of The Caribbean ride at Disneyland.

Best Line From The Movie – Captain Barbosa : “You best start believing in ghost stories Miss Turner, You’re in one.”

I give this movie a 4 out of 7. When you look at the series as a whole, it may not be the best entry, but it re-launched a genre no one else is even attempting right now.
