PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN : AT WORLD’S END (2007)

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD’S END (2007)

Tagline: At the End of the World, the Adventure Begins

In this one Elizabeth, Will and company sail off the edge of the map (loosely based on the flat-earth theory) with the help of the mysterious Tia Dalma and the late Captain Barbossa (who has been raised from the dead to save Captain Jack Sparrow). Jack has been condemned to the seemingly not-so-bad fate (if you like fish) of remaining in the void of Davey Jones's locker for eternity. Rescuing Jack, however, isn’t the real point of the movie (and if anything is probably the most understated thing about the movie). Lord Cutler Beckett has control of the heart of Davey Jones, and with that, he controls the sea including Davey Jones. The nine pirate lords of the world must unite for a final stand against Beckett, Jones, and the East India Trade Company (or the British Navy, depending on which reviewer you are reading that day).

The first scene takes place in Singapore which is about the place I would expect Chow Yung Fat did not want to be in this movie because – well I won’t give it away now. There is a huge action sequence with the trilogy's trademark spring-laden, lock-and-load manner of brilliance. From that point, the story does get pretty involved and you are forced to pay attention if you want to get the most out of it. Some critics who don’t like to pay attention to the movies they are watching have mistakenly pointed this out as a flaw. Jack does get rescued fairly quickly and without much fanfare while the special effects take over. I would probably not have wanted to act in this movie because everyone seems to be wet all the time. I spend part of the movie wondering where they got all those “quick dry” clothes.

The film does contain its share of odd and weird scenes just as the trailer promised, but this won’t be for everyone. At World’s End is by far the darkest installment in the series but the rid is so brazenly fun we almost forget about some of the more bizarre unnecessary scenes (like the brain-licking moment between Jack Sparrow and his imagined double). Depp is brilliant once again and the entire cast may have benefitted from the fact that this installment and Part II were shot one right after the other. You will be wondering what happened to the menace “The Kracken” who doesn’t even make an appearance in this one.

The last 45 minutes rightfully warrant high praise as one of the best action sequences on film in any genre. So yes, this is the best of the 3 released as of the time it came out, but those hoping for rumored dragons and more pirate lore will be left wanting more. I guess if you are Disney, this is exactly what you wanted.

Best line from this movie – Captain Barbosa: “Better were the days when mastery of the seas came not from bargains struck with eldritch creatures ….but from the sweat of a man’s brow and the strength of his back alone. You all know this to be true!”

I give this one a solid 5 out of 7. I think backing off on some of the weirdness might have actually served the movie better, but it's not like we weren't warned at the end of the last one.
