BACK TO THE FUTURE (1985)

BACK TO THE FUTURE (1985)

Marty McFly (played by Michael J Fox), gets mixed up with a dude named Dr. Emmett Brown or “Doc”, (played by Christopher Lloyd) and a plutonium theft where “Doc”, is getting hunted down by terrorists.  Marty ends up having to run, only he’s running in a DeLorean, "time machine" that “Doc” was testing that night. Marty ends up stuck in 1955 and runs into his parents who are much younger and haven’t met yet. A series of events leads to him having to not only ensure that his parents get together, but to also avoid letting his mom make out with him. Yeah – that was going on in this flick.

Overall this movie has ended up being one of the most popular and referenced movies of all time. The characters “Rick And Morty” from the oft Godophobic “Rick And Morty” show are both inspired by Doc and Marty. The movie is referenced in seemingly countless other areas in life including even drew the attention of former President Ronald Regan. Yes…the actor. All this is pretty astounding for a script that was rejected 44 times.

Cinematically this movie is almost timeless and involved relatively few effects that look strange by today’s standards. Even the older versions of Marty’s parents played by Lea Thompson and Crispin Glover had makeup work that feels “enough on par” to stand the test of time. While the story line does introduce a few strange concepts, none of it doesn’t’ get worked through in a way that not only doesn’t feel forced. Rather it fits soundly within the world being created. Michael J Fox was perfect for the role of Marty and I don’t know if they could have cast “Doc” any better than they did. The overall acting in this movie is outstanding.

One thing I love about this flick is that none of “Doc's” inventions are perfect and the 1955 version of him had a hard time making “anything” work. These little writing tricks, show that he’s progressed over time. The spectacular attention to detail in this thing is phenomenal and this is a movie you can go back to over and over, and have it never get old. In fact, I watched it recently and had completely forgotten that there is a really awesome sequence where Darth Vader is mentioned.

I have to give BACK TO THE FUTURE a solid 7 out 7.
