HURRICANE HEIST (2018)

HURRICANE HEIST (2018)

I can say right now, this was definitely one of those movies I saw the preview for and was like – “yep, skipping that, maybe it’s a (insert streaming service here) thing.” So needless to say I was kind of shocked that the movie got on Jenn’s uncle Rick’s radar. He had the Blu-Ray so naturally we had to check it out.

This movie revolves around an elaborate plan to steal millions from the U.S. Treasury in Alabama. Only of course they are going to do that during a hurricane when it’s I guess a “slightly” easier to steal stuff? I have no idea. On one hand, once you take out everyone guarding the place, no back up can get in, but how are you getting out? That makes this movie just pretty freakin cool off the top. It’s an impossible task complicated by an impossible bit of weather. Nothing goes smoothly at all after Casey (played by Maggie Grace) who is a treasury agent changes the safe code at the last minute before embarking on a search to find an electrician named “Breeze” who can fix a generator after it crashes at the treasury. While she is gone, the villains in this thing are going to kidnap Moreno (played by Christian Contreras) who is Casey’s boss or counterpart. It’s not really all that clear and it doesn’t matter. On top of that you have Will (played by Toby Kebbell), who is a meteorologist with like a bat-mobile hurricane hunting car in his arsenal. Will is breezes brother, and man…just watch out, because along with Casey, you are just gonna have your hands full stealing anything in this hurricane.

What works well in this movie is the plot and motives. Especially when a second layer of villains is introduced. This thing is like if TWISTER and HARD RAIN had a kid and that kid grew up into a full blown non-stop action flick. The CGI in this movie is credible but the stunts, overall believability and laws of physics are all catastrophically ignored in this thing. All that is what makes this damn thing just a blast to watch. If you were looking for real, this isn’t the place to find it. Just drive to a place that gets real hurricanes and stay at a safe distance if you want real. I actually found myself loving this movie and the acting is not at all terrible. Even the Alabama accents are fine.
Given the title you would think this would have been some low budget nightmare, but it’s not. It’s actually directed by Rob Cohen who is famous for being the executive producer on The Monster Squad and The Running Man, among a ton of other projects, and actually directing movies like Dragonheart and The Fast And The Furious.

Overall this is a movie I would definitely buy and it came as a pleasant surprise, because I usually can spot a good movie a mile away. This one slipped under my radar. I give HURRICANE HEIST a 6 out of 7 for just being massively enjoyable.
