THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH (1999)

THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH (1999)

This movie ended up making the 6th most money at the box office of any of the 24 James Bond movies. Of course with “No Time To Die” coming out in April 2020, I am sure that will change. Especially since the 3 previous Daniel Craig Bond movies all finished in the Top 5.

In this one James Bond is pretty much involved in an attempt on his life in the first 5 minutes as per usual, and ends up uncovering a plot that involves an oil heiress named Elektra (played by Sophie Marceau), whose father is murdered and now she’s basically just wants to jack everything up. I won’t get into too many details, but if you don’t know she is a villain in this by now, I gave you 21 years to watch this thing, so sorry for that small spoiler.

Loaded with great performances especially by the great actor Robert Carlyle as Renard (best known as Mr. Gold / Rumplestiltskin in “Once Upon A Time”), and actress Judi Dench among others, this movie also sadly features one of the most ridiculous miss-castings in cinematic history with Dr. Christmas Jones (played by Denise Richards from Starship Troopers). Yeah – she is a freakin nuclear physicist in this thing and apparently won the Olympics for under-water holding your breath time or something like that. I mean, I heard that this casting was bad for years, but finally saw the movie and I am just blown away. The rumors don’t even begin to spell out how bad it is. To Denise’s defense, it’s not even her fault. This one is all on director Michael Apted who was brilliant in directing “The Chronicles Of Narnia : Voyage of the Dawn Treader”, but just really drops the ball allowing this to happen. Unless of course, it wasn’t his fault either, then, I should probably just let this go. If they had let her play the part like Scarlett Johansson’s role as Silken Floss, it might have worked nicely. It's the acting that is the issue, not the age or gender.

The action sequences in this don’t live up to the other bond movies I have seen, and the opening sequence where Bond gets his shoulder injured feels like a really weak plot point to give Bond reasons to doubt Elektra’s sincerity, but that falls flat for me. Mostly because 007 falls off every building on the planet, gets totally beaten up by every hired gun in the cosmos, fights dudes 20 times his size, eats carrots and kale and seems to come out un-phased let alone injured.

This one gets a 4 out of 7, feeling even more out dated than most.
