STAR WARS : THE RISE OF SKYWALKER (2019)

STAR WARS : THE RISE OF SKYWALKER (2019)

In this one Kylo Ren is hunting down anyone that could be a threat to his power, and that includes the late Emperor Palpatine who has been sending cryptic threats across the galaxy. Of course don’t forget, he’s gotta take time out of his busy universe ruling schedule to hound Rey every chance he gets. Meanwhile the Resistance is trying to regain it’s strength and has sent Poe and Finn on a mission to obtain a message from a spy that has infiltrated the First Order. Leia is now training Rey to be a Jedi because Jedi’s are just more fun to train than dogs and parrots.

Palpatine by the way is the single worst name for a villain of all time. Even worse that Taserface from Guardians Of The Galaxy 2. Palpatine literally sounds like a drug you would get for psoriasis. Try Palpatine now and feel better in weeks. Unless of course you die, or become power hungry, lie a lot, or end up with yellow eyes, and death lightning coming out of your hands. Then we suggest you contact your local Jedi immediately. Anyway - The Rise Of Skywalker does not waste any time at all getting off the ground. We are full blown into extended action sequences and introductions to new characters within the first 20 minutes of this thing and it’s absolutely spectacular. I won’t give anything away here, but no only does this storyline keep The Last Jedi completely in tact, but it expounds on those ideas and takes them in a complex and brilliant direction that I think catches most off guard.

This is by far Daisy Ridley’s best performance as Rey, John Boyega’s most dynamic portrayal of Finn and Adam Driver’s best performance as Kylo Ren. I mean this thing surpassed all my expectations for what it could have been. The additions of Keri Russell as Zorli Bliss, Naomi Ackie as Jannah and the wisdom to bring back ian McDiarmid as Emperor Palpatine was genius even if they series has been hinting at it since Snoke showed up.

I suggest seeing this thing at least 3 to 4 times at theaters. The first sitting is spent just getting used to a lot of plot development and twisty reveals. The plot while easy to follow does move, it’s not kidding around, so you have to hold on for the ride. The second viewing allows you to embrace the details you might have missed the first time, and soak in the nice humor points that balance out a pretty dark yet poetic story. Extra viewings after that will help this thing sink into your memory, because it’s a flat out masterpiece of storytelling from start to finish.

I feel like the team that put this together went all out and gave us the best movie of the series, and if you have read my other reviews you know how much I liked the more recent films. They even do a spectacular job including archive footage with Carrie Fisher giving her a final film that is not only worthy of her but absolutely heart-felt. While fans may differ on Star Wars and even get toxic, do not be fooled, The Rise Of Skywalker is spellbinding, and easy 7 out of 7 for me.
