POKéMON DETECTIVE PIKACHU (2019)

POKéMON DETECTIVE PIKACHU (2019)

This movie is about a detective that goes missing and his son’s efforts to try and find him. He runs into a Pokémon he can actually talk to (because in this universe that is rare) and the two of them start to unravel the mystery behind the detective’s disappearance. All this is taking place just before Ryme City is going to have a giant end-of-BATMAN-style parade, celebrating the co-existence of humans and Pokémon living there.  In the rest of the world, typically humans and Pokémon only partner for fighting.  Is what Tim Goodman (played by Justice Smith) and Detective Pikachu discover going to rock the peaceful existence of both Pokémon and humans? Well, you will have to watch the movie to find out, because I am not going to give you the answer to that here.

First off if you just really can’t handle CGI, I am not sure if you need to read the rest of the review. Just turn the page or click one of the other review links on the sidebar. This thing is just loaded with crazy amounts of CGI. Having said that, it’s all pretty top-notch, and the Pokémon in this thing are freakin everywhere.  Like in your shoes, in your hair, in your car, just hanging out in the forest, in your pocket….literally everywhere.

Plot-wise this is a kid’s focused movie, but it bills itself as more of a mystery than it actually is. In fact, plot-wise it’s pretty smooth sailing, with a few plot twists but not a “mystery” in the sense that most people think of one. The humor is decent but there aren’t any moments where you are just falling out of your seat unless maybe your seat is just unstable and poorly constructed. This movie has some good acting by the likes of Bill Nighy (Victor from the UNDERWORLD series, as Howard Clifford) and Ryan Reynolds (DEADPOOL from the DEADPOOL series as Detective Pikachu). For Pokémon fans, this might have been a letdown about 15 years too late (the first video game this movie is based on came out in 1996).

For movie fans like me with not much Pokémon knowledge, it was entertaining enough to rent but it’s not something I need to own. Having said that, it's hard to knock a movie that you can tell was a labor of love and gives you enough of what a lot of people go to the movies for.
