ANTITRUST (2001)
So if you want to know what this movie is…watch THE CIRCLE
and imagine it with an ending that doesn’t make you want to jump out of a first
floor window after ripping your eyes out. Damn not even a cast with Karen Gillan,
Emma Watson and Tom Hanks could fix that pile of garbage. What was I talking
about again? Oh yeah, ANTITRUST. This movie is about a tech firm that is trying
to keep the dream of the 90’s alive in Portland…only they are not going about
it in the usual way.
Milo (played by Ryan Phillippe probably best known for CRUEL
INTENTIONS) decides to part ways with his genius IT friends, and go big time.
It takes a while, but he basically finds out they are shady as hell and tries
getting out of there. Normally you would know to not trust anyone in this
situation but bam…he trusts pretty much everyone, right up to the point where
it really counts “not to”. Along with 90’s star Rachael Leigh Cook, as Lisa,
and Claire Forlani (best known for her role in MEET JOE BLACK) this movie is
loaded with effort and even a bit of creepy foresight. I think what this tech
company was describing trying to create, is basically either a super intrusive
version of the internet, or Skynet from the freakin Terminator movies. Overall
I really enjoyed this thing, and seeing Tim Robbins in kind of a Bill Gates
with bad intentions kind of character was pretty interesting.
If you haven’t seen this movie, it’s on HULU right now in the 90’s section. However it’s not something you have to break into a your local Wal-Mart, and dive into the bargin bin to see right away either. For an engaging break from big blockbusters, this is a nice mid intensity thriller worth your time. I give ANTITRUST a 5 out of 7. Then again…you are really going to have to TRUST me on that?
