AQUAMAN (2018)

AQUAMAN (2018)
Tagline – “A Tide Is Coming”.

People of Atlantis, hear me! My brother has come from the surface... to challenge me for the throne! Let us settle this in the ancient way: by bloodshed do the gods make known their will!
When this first got announced, I was really about as un-excited as it can get. Aside from Lex Luther I thought Aquaman was one of DC’s dumbest characters ever. However after seeing the other DC movies and being one of the few that like every single one, for me this was a “can’t miss”. What helped, was the fact that early reviews had high praise for the flick. Jason Momoa plays AQUAMAN reprising his role from BATMAN VS SUPERMAN (just a glimpse) & JUSTICE LEAGUE. He is a child named Arthur born to a human father and Atlanna (played by Nicole Kidman) but Atlantis wants Atlanna back and they are pretty much willing to kill everyone around her over it. Years pass and we discover what happened to Atlanna, and find out who Arthur Curry was really meant to be. Along the way Arthur makes some enemies one of which isn’t to be messed with named Manta. In the movie Manta actually looks pretty short but the actor who plays him Yahya Addul-Mateen II isn’t short at all. He’s 6 ft 3 in, which maybe just looked short opposite Jason Momoa who is 6 ft 4 in.

Anyway there is a bunch of other stuff going on in this thing but the movie is well paced, it takes it’s time explaining things. It also manages to give us enough mind-blowing action as if director James Wan was ripping the script right off the DC’s comic pages. To date, this is the most complete, well rounded comic book movie ever made. If you know how much I loved GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and BLACK PANTHER, that is saying a LOT. No CIVIL WAR is not even close, WINTER SOLDIER is barely a super hero movie (before you freak, it was the 5th best movie to come out in 2014), it's more like Tom Clancy novel.

In this thing we get everything from huge sea beasts to sharks with freakin lasers and all kinds of crazy stuff. The characters are rich and the story line actually surprised me as well after some reviews had the “crazy” to label it “soulless”. I don’t know how they could have packed any more soul into this damn thing. It’s interesting to see Patrick Wilson as King Orm after he was so likable as Night Owl in THE WATCHMEN. Julie Andrews also has an awesome role in this, I guess she opted to not be involved in the MARY POPPINS sequel. Amber Heard is epic as Mera (personal issues aside), Dolph Lundgren is great as King Nereus. For me, only Willem Dafoe felt very oddly out of place casting-wise.

The overall cinematography and pacing were completely on point in this and the climax of the movie is one for the freakin ages. If you have not seen AQUAMAN, drop what you are doing and see it now. This thing is just a site to behold with the right amount of heart to put this one over the top. If I had an 8, this movie would get that.
