JUSTICE LEAGUE (2017)

JUSTICE LEAGUE (2017)

Saw this movie on Saturday morning and really felt I had to sit down and give it a full review. First off, the plot of this thing I just loved. It reminded me quite a bit of HELLBOY : THE GOLDEN ARMY. So if you didn’t like that movie, I can see you having issues with this. In spite of all the rants about editing, this movie felt unreservedly even and rid of unnecessary fades to black and long drawn-out camera dives into the main part of the scene. For me, much like BATMAN V SUPERMAN : DAWN OF JUSTICE,  this one was easy to follow and doesn’t take a rocket scientist to fill in any perceived blind-spots. It doesn’t feel choppy or edited unless STAR WARS felt like that to you before you knew there was an extra Jabba scene.  One strike against this JUSTICE LEAGUE for me, would be that, “no”, we didn’t get all of what we see in the previews and that drives me nuts. In fact, I think studios should get sued over it, if they don’t, at the very least, cram it into a deleted scenes segment on the BLU RAY.

Parts of the movie feel intentionally slow-moving but the richness of the dialogue adds to the emotions (especially scenes between FLASH and CYBORG with FLASH feeling like an outsider). I think this helps people identify with the characters on a much deeper level (unless they are just checked out). There are also some seamless scenes with Martha Kent and Lois that I wasn’t quite expecting. Especially in a film I was feeling would be a frame-for-frame barrage of action. Villain-wise we probably get the best one we have seen in quite some time. In a flashback it takes almost the entire world to defeat him and the league is like a bunch of rag dolls to him in most of this. Jason Momoa as Aquaman could have used more dialogue, but I think throwing that into this storyline would have caused pacing issues. His backstory wasn’t completely filled in, but it will be interesting to see what happens if there is a solo film for him. The FLASH was good, but I think I still like season 1 THE FLASH’s Barry Allen from TV better. Cyborg was really freakin cool. Ben is still the undisputed (unless you are just a huge fan of Batman's that can’t stick a landing) best Batman ever and it was nice to see Wonder Woman, how she is portrayed in this one. Some very nice storyline surprises here. The scenes between her and Batman are pretty damn worth the price of admission alone (as is the massive battle with the Amazons, holy damn cow). I did hear some gripes about the CGI, but honestly, I didn’t have any issues there.
Overall I loved this thing. For me it’s an easy 7 out of 7 in spite of striking my missing previews nerve. If you haven’t seen this, get to the theaters while it’s out. This is a movie I feel a lot of people may need multiple viewings for to catch all the intricate details and continuity involved. Better yet, overcome any hang ups you have about BATMAN V SUPERMAN : DAWN OF JUSTICE  and watch that before heading to this one.
