TAU (2018)

TAU (2018)
Okay – I have been sitting on this one awhile, trying to get my head around some other reviews, then kind of revising my thoughts on this thing. Overall TAU has a stark similarity with EX MACHINA in the sense that both films revolve around AI and a mad scientist trying to push their intellectual baloney on the nearest would be victim. Outside of that, these two films depart from one another in a lot of interesting ways. After Julia, (played by Maika Monroe, Independence Day : Resurgence) tries to rob Alex, (played by Ed Skrein, Alita : Battle Angel, Maleficent 2) decides he just going to pretty much keep Julia as a pet. His house is like the house in EUREKA on twice as much crack. 99% of this movie happens in an underground structure, so if that makes you feel claustrophobic, sit this one out.
The effects and atmosphere are decent in this, but I doubt Netflix is going to rack up any awards in that department. Overall the creepy AI voiced by Gary Oldman and the overall cinematography here is super strong. While the dialog doesn’t reach the philosophically complex level we get in EXMACHINA, there is no shortage of starting to feel the movie is moving towards an un-expected direction. That direction makes this a more satisfying movie emotionally than it had any right to be. It also does answer one question we never get in most sci films. "How do you discipline an AI, without dismantling it?"

Overall I liked this movie (made by Netflix) better than some of the other crap Netflix is starting to churn out, but in no way was it something that I didn’t find relatively forgettable. What the film does do is provide some good evidence that no one is making a mistake by hiring Maika Monroe to carry a film. She’s quiet adequate at that.
