EX MACHINA (2015)
This movie is about a really smart computer programmer who
is asked to visit a secret facility, that has just made a huge breakthrough in
AI. The idea is to test the AI robot or Ava (played by Alicia Vikander SEVENTH SON)
to see if she is essentially human, (capable of unpredictable thought) for lack of a better way of putting it. The
film is divided into seven acts, and with each ascending session, things get tenser and tenser.
Overall the dialog in this thing alone is worth a watch, but I
do think the intellectuals of the world throw around the term “god” too much.
Even the title of the film is overly pompous. Anyway, EX MACHINA is loaded with
brilliant performances and a level of intelligent dialog that while complex, is
brought to the viewer in very real ways, with very real questions. In other words, even the esoteric grandstanding that is done is clarified. Ava is given sexuality. This aspect is at the core of the entire film, as well as the
reasons as to why.
For me, the ending was about as bad as it could have been,
but for this film, it makes sense, in its complete effect of dissatisfaction. The
theme of isolation and projection of power is not only dark but hauntingly
handled which is not uncommon with these types of films. Where EX MACHINA
succeeds is in the execution, effects, and acting across the board.
I am not
sure I liked it more than AUTOMATA, but it definitely does a good job of
getting you to think about why we do the things we do, and the missing element
in AI. Not for the kiddies.
