THE HEAD (1959)

THE HEAD (1959)

Tagline: It Just Won't Lay Down And Stay Dead!

(Sci-Fi, Horror, Mad Science) [PG-13]

Note – This movie did not originally have an MPAA rating, but I am pretty sure it would have been a PG-13.

Yes, I'm sick. Yes, I'm sick, and you're the only one who knows it, but I don't care. You belong to me and me alone. Professor Hartmann experimented on my brain. The results were fantastic. It made a genius of me. Hear me, a genius!

Okay, damn. In this one a mad-scientist Dr. Burke is pretty much thinking he is going to create a method of keeping a dogs head alive after it’s body dies. Because what else are mad scientists supposed to do all night. Things take a turn for the even “crazier” when the mad scientist dies and his assistant “even madder scientist” Dr. Ood, decides he wants to date a beautiful woman’s body with a nuns head. Yep…. There you have it kids. Do not try this at home, or even attempt to eat anything that has the word “TIDE” on it.

The Nun played by Karin Kernke does know Dr. Burke but can’t stand Dr. Ood. So she is super nervous about having Dr. Ood work to fix the fact that she’s a hunchback, and with good reason. Dr. Ood has got just the head of Dr. Burke in his secret lab just basically alive and asking to be killed.

Overall the acting in this movie isn’t all that bad given the era, but Horst Frank as Dr. Ood is a bit over the top and awkward at times. The storyline itself is simple enough and there are lots of heads talking by themselves, guys and gals with 2 heads, people with no heads etc. in cinema, but this one has the oddest setups and reasoning behind everything going on. It’s also probably one of the most sexist movies I have seen in a few years and I watch a TON of movies.

The final verdict is a 1 out of 7. In spite of some decent execution this movie is a waste of everyone’s time even with its semi-happy yet macabre ending.
