BEHEMOTH THE SEA MONSTER (1959)

BEHEMOTH THE SEA MONSTER (1959)

One thing is sure. Something has happened here that isn't in the book.

So apparently in 1959 some heavy-duty nuclear tests were going on near London and one of them woke up a dormant dinosaur (at least in this movie).  Now hell-bent on destroying every regular city building in London (and leaving all the good ones alone) this radioactive, electrified monster is Britain’s worst freakin nightmare.

Directed by Douglas Hickox and Eugene Lourie this movie does some things very well, and others just flat out terribly. The dialog in this one is stronger than most films of this kind at the time, and the acting is pretty decent. It stands to reason that Hickox learned a lot in his time working on The Invisible Man TV series as a second unit director. The close ups are pretty daring and we get some pretty cool camera angles.

What isn’t cool is, every-water shot in this movie especially when the Behemoth comes partly out of the water to let us see exactly how much of a model he really is. There are also some odd moments where for some reason the 70ft monster only causes boils on some people and they die, and others end up basically charred to death. Right up until the final scene it looks like the Behemoth might be a match for Godzilla? The parallels between this one and GODZILLA (1956) are pretty hard to miss, only this effects team opted for stop motion, rather than a guy in a suit. Even the overall plots are ridiculously similar.

If you want to watch this one you might be able to find it on a archieve streaming service for free, otherwise it's going to be a rental. It is actually one of the better old giant monster movies on a lot of levels. The weirdest scene in this one for me was the fact that the submarine at the end had a car’s steering wheel. I’ve never seen that before.

For lots of decent dialog, bumbling scientists and a credible threat of a monster, I have to give this one a 4 out of 7. If Godzilla hadn’t come out first, this might have turned into its own (not as awesome as Godzilla) series. (This film is aka The Giant Behemoth)
