PACIFIC RIM :
UPRISING (2018)
This one picks up with the son of Stacker
Pentecost, Jake, reuniting with Mako Mori (his sister whom Stacker adopted, if
you didn’t watch the first one, just do that) to lead a new generation of
Jaeger pilots, including rival Lambert and 15-year-old hacker Amara, against something
that would give the plot away.
Unlike the original, this one feels a LOT more thought out and creatively advanced. Just the idea’s
we end up getting in this one are not only unlike anything we’ve seen in the
Kaiju movie-verse, but is fantastically bonkers. This alone is almost worth
watching the movie for by itself, but this one has a lot to offer. I wish I had some sort
of "I would have changed this" critique for this movie, but I just don’t. I flat out loved it. In fact, we
watched this back to back with READY PLAYER ONE and this one was the one I
would love to buy the day it comes out. Jenn and Logan said the same thing.
Some of the things I loved about it include the fight scenes grand scale of the fight scenes and why the fighting was happening, this mysterious Jeager turning up from seemingly out of nowhere, the uprising itself. The movie is just over-loaded with awesome even down to the soundtrack. The interaction between Jake (John Boyega) and Amara (newcomer Cailee Spaeny) is better than anything we get in the first movie and the plotline even gives the Kaiju unexpected but exciting attributes.

Effects wise Uprising
does lack the detail of the original and the overall feel is more TRANSFORMERS
as well (which isn’t an issue for me, but it is what it is). Having said that
the solid storyline and serviceable acting allows this one to deliver the giant
monsters punch fans expect. Some great performances from Charlie Day and Burn
Gorman stand out. Nothing in this movie is what it seems. I love that type of
thing.
I can’t bring myself to give this movie anything lower than a 7. Sadly the box office as of the writing of this review looks to put a damper on a 3rd installment coming out any time soon. If you liked the first one… you will probably like this one better.
